Giving a little to help those with serious medical problems who are unable to help themselves
The Emergency Assessment Fund is an Eastern Bay of Plenty charity that helps people to get the urgent medical assessments they need. In many cases people are having to wait too long for critical assessments simply because they cannot afford it.
This initiative was launched by a group of concerned medical professionals to bridge the gap between public waiting lists and specialist appointments.
Here are a couple of early results.
A lady with abdominal pain presents to a free specialist review clinic in Ohope after being referred by her GP. The GP is concerned the patient needs urgent investigation. The Fund pays $380 dollars for an ultrasound of her abdomen as the patient can not afford it and discovers in two days that she has metastatic ovarian cancer.Treatment/chemotherapy is started within 10 days potentially saving her life.
A male in his mid 50s has been having stomach pain for 18 months. GP refers and the patient is faced with a six month wait in the public system for an endoscopy. The Emergency Assessment Fund pays for a private endoscopy and esophageal cancer is confirmed. The patient is listed for urgent surgery and potential cure.
Please give a little to help fund more cases like these. The people of the Eastern Bay of Plenty will be extremely grateful.

The Emergency Assessment Fund was started because there are patients and families stressed by being unwell and not knowing what is wrong with them. Even though finding a diagnosis can sometimes be traumatic for the patient and family as with one patient whose ovarian cancer had spread, there was such relief that she didn't have to wait 6 months to find out her diagnosis and start treatment. There are more patients like her that we can all help. Please give generously to this cause.
