Help support Magda's Scientific Research Expedition to Fiordland through BLAKE NZ

$930 of $1,500 goal
Given by 12 generous donors in 5 weeks

Support Magda to attend once-in-a-lifetime expedition with BLAKE NZ to Doubtful Sound, to explore and research the fjord carbon sinks.

New Plymouth, Taranaki

Kia ora! I'm Magdalene, an 18-year-old student studying in my first year of Law at the University of Canterbury. I attended highschool in New Plymouth, Taranaki where during this time I attended BLAKE Inspire, a youth programme for enviromental leadership, partnered with the Ministry of the Environment. This opportunity increased my awareness of various enviromental issues we see in NZ and beyond, developed my leadership abilities and helped me network with professionals and like-minded students.

In 2024, I'm thrilled to be selected as one of only 8 students to attend BLAKE Expeditions - the next tier in the BLAKE NZ science programmes. This June, we are travelling to Doubtful Sound (Fjordland).

Doubtful Sound is the deepest of New Zealand’s 14 fjords. Fjords are significant carbon sinks. I will be involved in carbon storage and cilmate regulation research alongside experienced scientists and environmental leaders (a collaboration between research organisations such as Otago Uni, GNS Science and Ngāi Tahu). This research will help us understand the size, mechanics, and stability of carbon sinks in NZ and across the world.

This is an incredible privilege and I need your support!

Use of funds

Each student delegate must raise $1,500 to assist the costs of participation. Your contributions, no matter how big or small, will be immensely appreciated and bring me closer to reaching this important milestone.

Ngā mihi nui,

- Magdalene

Latest update

Thank you for helping me get to Fjordland!  30 April 2024

Hi everyone. I depart for the BLAKE Expeditions in fjordland from Queenstown by helicopter on the 3rd June to the 8th June. I couldn’t be more excited to have the opportunity to go and grow my knowledge in our great native outdoors. Now that this fundraiser has closed I wanted to say I couldn’t have achieved this milestone without the support of my community. I am immensely grateful for all those who supported my venture. I plan to record my experiences on this trip to make a video to share afterwards. Stay tuned!

Many, many thanks,

Magdalene H
