Please help me offer these women the opportunity to become engaged Moroccan citizens through reading and becoming empowered citizens.
Nationwide
In 2015, I was lucky to be accepted as a volunteer for Jossour Forum des Femmes Marocainnes (Moroccan Women's Forum). I spent a month working in Rabat, Morocco and was surprised at just how underfunded the centre was, and still is. Students resorted to using random textbook hardcovers as a whiteboard to practice tracing letters and words (Arabic, French, and English), there were no books for students to practice reading, and due to government policies, it is difficult for the centre to purchase more books.
While there, I bought some books to set up a library for the students and, since returning to NZ in 2016, I've collected approximately 70 books and 2 world maps, as well as 60 workbooks kindly donated by Otago University UniCrew Volunteers. These books include some NZ classics (Lynley Dodd, Joy Cowley etc) as well as books for the teachers. Unfortunately, NZ isn't the best place to send books from and, by my calculations (checking with NZ Post online shipping guidelines), it is going to cost approximately $550 to ship them to Rabat. If there is any left over money, this will be donated to Joussour.
Thank you very much in advance for your support of this project and of these students.,
Arohanui,
Anna
I volunteered and worked with the teachers at Joussour Forum Des Femmes Marocaines and have been liaising with Omayma Achour, the President of JFFM.
