Empty field to Educational playground Ban Na Yang School Laos

The goal is to build an education playground in Ban Na Yang School, Nanyang Village Laos. The school has four class rooms catering to children aged 5 to 12 years. Nanyang Village is located 26 km north of the capital city Vientiane, it is authentic rural Laos. The traditional income is from rice farming a subsistence crop which keeps the majority of families in relative poverty. Families pay to send their children to state schools, they hope, like all of us, for greater opportunities for them.

Educational playgrounds are places where children can learn to make sense of the world around them. Through play children can develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and gain the self-confidence required to engage in new experiences and environments. Play based interventions have been shown to increase time subsequently spent in school, levels of qualifications achieved, and the lifetime earnings from work. It can just be fun too!

Currently around the school is the playground; a bare grass field surrounded by a block wall. The only apparatus are two bare metal goal posts. Going from this to an educational playground will take imagination, time, equipment and of course money.

Materials needed to construct the playground include used tyres, metal and timber posts/supports for apparatus frames, concrete and sand for foundations. Tools needed for construction include socket set, drill, angle grinder, wheel barrows, hacksaw, wood saws, shovels, spades. Labour to build the playground will be provided by myself, volunteers, local parents and teachers, also some local experts.

All materials and tools will be sourced locally, benefiting the local economy.
