Flat Man & SmileDial are travelling NZ to raise awareness of their work in communities all over the country. $5 a day budget and rides limi
Nationwide
Flat man and SmileDial join forces once a year to raise money for their individual work. This is a chance for us to tell people about our work, meet kids, visit hospitals and say thank you for those who support us already. More details can be found on our Flat Man SmileDial Facebook page.
SmileDial provides support to families who are raising children with special needs or in need of ongoing medical care. SmileDial first started as a support group where caregivers could come together to support each other, vent frustrations and share milestones together.
We have since grown to having almost 1000 members in our support group, and even more registered with us. We now host coffee groups around the country, provide much needed medical and therapy equipment to families, provide advocacy for families, and we have helped make changes in the community to improve accessibility for our members.
Most importantly, we provide mental and emotional support through mental health referrals, by helping our member access councilors and other mental health workers.
SmileDial has been running for 7 years, and we are one of the few charities in New Zealand where 100% of donations that we receive go to the families we support. This includes money raised through our Givealittle pages.
Update for 07/07/2014 7 July 2014
Flat Man & I (Kelly ""Boy"" Dugan from SmileDial) are very super EPIC stoked to announce the details of our next adventure. An adventure that will bring us to towns and cities all over New Zealand from Stewart island to Cape Reinga all to raise awareness of the work we do for our individual charities. So here are the details and rules of our next EPIC adventure.., Flat Man and Kelly will travel the entire length of New Zealand from Stewart Island to Cape Reinga. They can hitchhike (each ride is a maximum of 20Kms) unless this is impossible including the ferry ride across Cook Straight. No rides can be prearranged They are allowed clothes and a backpack each with extra clothing, phones and a laptop, nothing else. They are allowed a small allowance of $10 ($5 each) a day for food. They will rely on the good people of NZ to feed them, give them rides and provide accommodation. They will use this as an opportunity to raise awareness of their individual charity work and hopefully raise some money so they can continue their work. Below is the ""planned"" journey, if you can offer a couch, a hotel room, a meal or want us to come and say hello get in touch with your location and phone number. Following is the proposed itinerary (note if we cannot get rides while hitchhiking this may change).
