Expedition to the Sub-Antarctic Islands

$2,155 of $2,000 goal
Given by 28 generous donors in 10 weeks

I am raising funds to voyage to the Sub-Antarctic Islands as part of a BLAKE Expedition.

Northland

Kia Ora! I’m Elsa Buckley, a 15-year-old student at Whangarei Girls’ High School. In August 2022 I had the privilege of attending BLAKE Inspire, a youth programme focussed on environmental leadership. The week broadened my knowledge of current environmental issues and how youth can help to solve them, helped me to develop my leadership skills and allowed me to meet some amazing like-minded peers.

I have been offered another once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join a group of young Kiwis on a BLAKE Expedition aboard the HMNZS Canterbury to the Sub-Antarctic Islands from the 13th - 26th of February 2023. Voyagers will join scientists to conduct climate surveys on Campbell Island to assess climate systems, species diversity and abundance and learn about ship life. Campbell Island is the most southerly of NZ’s Sub-Antarctic Islands, with a myriad of plant and animal life. It is a true privilege to be able to visit such a remote place. The life skills, experience and knowledge that I will gain from this trip will be invaluable.

This expedition will enable me to apply the knowledge and experience I gain to my school and community to create positive change. As a result of my learnings at BLAKE Inspire, I am running a fruit tree planting project at my school. I hope that following this Expedition I can create even greater change.

Each student voyager has been asked to raise $2,000 to help cover the costs of this amazing trip. Anything that you can give will be greatly appreciated!

She’s home  21 February 2023

Understandably but really disappointingly Elsa’s trip to Campbell Island came to an abrupt end when the navy ship they were travelling on was recalled to help with the recovery after Cyclone Gabrielle. Elsa did manage to have about 1.5 days at Campbell Island and helped with research gathering sea kelp. She’s now home again. Thank you all so much for the support in helping her to get there.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
