I want to improve the safety in the Far North for the 1,600 residents and 120,000 guests.
Nationwide
The Aupouri Peninsula in the far north houses the northern most communities in New Zealand, with approximately 1600 people living along the 100km stretch of land.
On Friday 11th of July a friend arrived at my home asking me to call the ambulance for his uncle, who had passed out and was not breathing, but sadly due to a power cut we had no phone and live in an area with no cellphone coverage. Eventually with delays we were able to access emergency services, but this highlighted a massive issue, in safety, in the area.
That day we lost a life and I hope to put measures in place to make sure we never lose a life again because of lack of communications.
One of the most beautiful places in New Zealand, 120,000 visitors a year travel along the piece of State highway 1 that runs thought the peninsula to go to Cape Reianga. But along this piece of SH1 the coverage is patchy in places and none existent in the top half. This is also an area which is prone to power cuts, leaving the peninsula without any communications. I am hoping to fundraise for defribillators to stored at key locations along with Personal locator beacons, (which are a satellite GPS beacon) allowing emergency services to be contacted in even the most extreme circumstances. Any extra funds once we have provided theses items will go to Northland Emergency Services Trust, to support the rescue choppers that service this area. This could be life saving for the inhabitants and also one of the 120,000 visitors to this area every year. Please help us to keep them safe.
