Felix the Kitten needs your Help

  • Felix's progress

      25 September 2021

Felix has been eating well and seems to be slowly having more energy every day. He is going back to the vet for some more x-rays to see if his lungs have improved with all the medication he is having, so a plan can be made from there.

A few new toys have helped get him excited about playing.

The new tunnel toy has been a big hit with him and his sister (see video).

He is such a special little kitten and it is very heart warning to have the donations and support, so thank you all.

  • Felix begins to Play

      14 September 2021

Over this last week after seeing the vet Felix has settled into a routine. He has the oxygen for about 4 hours a day and has begun to play with his sister and become more active.

She can be a bit much for him and he has to rest, but he seems to be getting stronger every day. He has occasional coughing fits which are quite daunting, though the good side is that they help to clear the muck out of his lungs.

He has become much more interested in food too, so this seems hopeful.

Thanks so much to all those who have kindly supported Felix's recovery.

  • A Return to the Vet

      14 September 2021

Felix was still quite weak and not eating well, the Lynfield Vet's who have been really great, said euthanasia may need to be considered if he didn't improve. It was unclear exactly what the infection was and if recovery was likely. The good part was that his breath rate had lowered.

He was taken to the Ellerslie Vet as they have more in house diagnostics available. The Vet there, Catherine, gave three options. First was to sedate him and take a sample from his lungs and have it analysed (which he may not survive), which would cost about $1200, the second was to try a combination of antibiotics along with the anti fungal and anti inflammatory for a few weeks to see if he improved. Then to take a new X Ray and run blood tests.

    The third option was euthanasia.

So the second option seemed the best one for now.

  • Oxygen assistance for Felix

      9 September 2021

After speaking with the vet about Felix's needs, she thought that oxygen therapy would help him. Due to lock-down its not easy for him to have this type of support at a clinic (and very expensive).

Quite miraculously a second hand oxygen concentrator machine, was being sold by a near neighbour for $320. With the hope that the funding page might cover it, this was bought and has made a huge difference to Felix. He seems to understand how to use it with no trouble at all.

Please share this page if you know any animal lovers who could spare a little to help Felix.

From being very listless initially, Felix has been picking up in small stages. Here he is resting after a vet visit, with his sister keeping him company. This was the first time he purred since arriving.

Day by day he is getting stronger and more active. It is so wonderful to have some financial support to help him, thank you all so much, he is such a special kitten.

  • Second trip to the Vet

      6 September 2021

The first lot of medication was finished and Felix was dehydrated due to not eating and drinking enough. The antibiotics seem to be helping him, so he has more of those now and received fluids. He perked up after that and has been eating more.

  • Felix's first trip to the vet

      6 September 2021

Felix was very low in energy, not wanting to move and had a very fast breathe rate.

On his first trip to the vet he was given antibiotics, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory medication. X-rays showed that his lungs were cloudy, though the reason was unclear. So the medication given was to cover all possibilities.

He improved but was not eating so well, possibly some of the medication was causing nausea. However he remained cheerful and affectionate.
