A non-profit student initiative that aims to improve the health outcomes of those living in rural Fijian communities.
Canterbury
Hello my name is Jonty Schmidt and I am a third year Dentistry student at the University of Otago. I am very fortunate to be selected to take part in this project.
The Fiji Village Project is a non-profit student initiative that aims to improve the health outcomes of rural Fijian communities. I will be volunteering with 14 other Dentistry, Medical, Pharmacy and Nursing students from around New Zealand. Together we will be travelling to villages located outside of Suva to provide basic health screening and clinic referrals in collaboration with the Ministry of Health in Fiji.
The project aims to promote health through educational programmes focussed on healthy lifestyles, sexual health, water sanitation and oral health. We will also aid in the installation of rainwater harvesting tanks to provide a clean and sustainable source of water for these rural communities.
This project is fully self funded (ie I am paying for my own flights and accommodation). Every volunteer on the project is raising $750 each to provide water tanks, expand village dams, and help provide health screening equipment. I am really excited to be going to Fiji to participate in this project and immersing myself in the local culture.
Any support from you will not only help out the Fiji Village Project team but also greatly benefit the villagers.
Thank you for your interest. Please consider contributing to helping us improve the health outcomes of the communities we work with in Fiji.
To provide materials to expand village dams and water tanks, and help provide basic health screening equipment. All of this will help improve the health outcomes of these rural communities.
Thank You!! 26 January 2019
I would like to say thank you again and give you a quick update about how your donation contributed to our Fiji Village Project.
We worked with the Naikawangga Village about 50mins drive out from Suva. Over the two weeks in the village we were able to provide health screening to over 100 people, gift two water tanks to the village, provide basic dental care, and become immersed in the Fijian culture.
It was a huge privilege to be welcomed into such a kind and joyful community. The memories and new connections across the Pacific will be something I take with me for a long time.
