We are raising funds to build water tanks and provide medical supplies while volunteering in rural Fijian Villages.
Auckland
Kia Ora! Myself (Georgia), Mikkol and Gemma are all nursing students who have been selected to participate in a two week project in Fiji at the beginning of 2020. We are all super excited! Please read our stories down the page :)
The Fiji Village Project (FVP) is an international non-for-profit humanitarian project executed by medical students from Australia, Fiji and New Zealand. It aims to promote health in the South Pacific region and bring together medical students from the region to work towards a common goal. The project is conducted in December-January each year and involves medical, nursing and dentistry students from New Zealand, Australia and Fiji travelling to villages located just outside of Suva. As a group we will be completing medical screening, education and establishing a clean water supply within the villages.
Over $11,000 is needed this year to let us help the people of Suva in a sustainable, long term way and be able to improve their health outcomes.
OUR INVOLVEMENT
Georgia's Involvement
Kia Ora! I am a second year nursing student from the University of Auckland and am super excited to be travelling to Fiji with an amazing group of students. I have been fortunate enough to participate in an international volunteer trip in 2015 to Malawi which resulted in my passion for aid work and assisting those in need. I love nursing and am very passionate about providing healthcare and education to those who require it most. I am looking forward to learning from the people of Fiji and aiding them in their healthcare journey.
Gemma's Involvement
Kia Ora! My name is Gemma Wyllie and I am a second year nursing student at the University of Auckland. Throughout my nursing studies I have seen the significance of not only treating a person’s illness but changing the social and physical environment causing the illness. The Fiji Village Project is an opportunity for me to provide a holistic healthcare practice approach when treating patients. To be able to help those in need is a privilege and brings me happiness. In the rural Fiji healthcare setting, I hope to improve my communication, medical skills and scope of practice for the future.
Mikkol's Involvement
Kia Ora Whānau! My name is Mikkol Macabali and I am a soon-to-be 2019 graduate in the School of Nursing in the University of Auckland. I have been fortunate enough to be granted a position in the 2020 Fiji Village Project and I am beyond ecstatic for it! My years of study have solidified my passion for health and being its advocate for those with the greatest needs. However, this profession has also widened my perspective on preventable medical conditions and health inequalities that continues to exist within our society. With your support, we can work towards providing quality and early interventions for villages in Fiji. Together, we can uphold their inherent right to clean & safe environments, community teamwork and quality of life. Ngā manaakitanga!
The money raised will go towards providing water tanks in villages which do not have sustainable or clean drinking water. Money will also go towards funding basic healthcare screening within the communities.
