Help the Curnows take their first-ever family holiday: a break from full-time care, and a chance to rest, connect, and just be together.
Nelson
Our son Alister and daughter-in-law Stephanie are the devoted parents of five children. Their second eldest, 15-year-old Annabelle, is a non-verbal autistic girl. She is deeply loved, and her presence has a profound impact on the entire family.
Caring for Annabelle has become increasingly challenging as she’s grown older. While she can be sweet and affectionate, she can also be physically violent. Stephanie is often injured, Annabelle’s siblings have been hit, and damage to the home and belongings is common. Annabelle has climbed a two-metre fence to escape, banged on walls for hours, and severely restricted the family’s ability to leave the house.
Outings that most families take for granted, like a beach walk, playground visit, or café meal, are fraught with difficulty and are unrealistic. A holiday has never been possible.
Stephanie’s care for Annabelle is a full-time, exhausting job. The other children miss out on time with their parents, and the toll on everyone’s mental health is growing.
That’s why we’re raising funds to give them something they’ve never had: their first ever holiday away as a family.
A break. A breath. A chance to enjoy each other.
During this time, Annabelle will be safely cared for. And the rest of the family will be free—for just a little while—to do what so many of us get to do without thinking: spend time together, rest, explore, and make joyful memories.
Your support would mean the world.
I’m Alister’s mum and want to give his hardworking family the break they’ve never had: a chance to rest, reconnect, and make memories.
Funds will cover flights, car rental, petrol, activities (Rainbow’s End, Sky Tower, Rangitoto), meals, a hotel night for the parents, and spending money.

Thanks so much for all the donations. We are getting closer to the goal of giving the Curnow family their first-ever family holiday.
Since the last update, life has brought more hard things their way.
Stephanie (Mum) has been in and out of hospital with sudden eyesight problems and has now received an unexpected, life-changing diagnosis of MS.
Annabelle has once again been excluded from taxis for the morning run, with no explanation given.
The family is also getting work done in Annabelle’s room to make her life safer and hopefully reduce the noise and stress of her banging on her walls. This isn't a typical bedroom makeover - it involves installing strengthened glass in the windows, lining the walls with wood so she can't punch any more holes (they will have to completely redo all the walls eventually with all the holes), infilling with foam, and then lining the walls and floor with an industrial linoleum. And, fitting a new reinforced door with a soft-close elbow.
Please consider making a donation to give the Curnows something to look forward to.
Thank you.
