Fundraising to build a flatting-for-seniors Abbeyfield Abbeyfield Waimakariri House in North Canterbury
Rangiora, Canterbury
It’s easy to overlook the growing number of single seniors for whom retirement life is not always an enjoyable experience.
For many it can be a retirement of rapidly increasing costs, loss of driver’s licence, loneliness, unsuitable accommodation, rising rents and poor health resulting from an inadequate diet.
That’s where Abbeyfield Waimakariri Inc. comes in: a not-for-profit team of volunteers in North Canterbury building a communal house of 14 affordable rental ensuite studios in Kingsbury Avenue, Rangiora.
There are 15 Abbeyfield Houses in New Zealand so far and now it’s time for one in Waimakariri.
Each resident will have their private en-suite studio, meals prepared by a housekeeper who also does the shopping, looks after communal areas and keeps an eye on residents’ well-being.
Affordable rent covers accommodation, power, food and overheads while volunteers manage the house and gardens.
No capital contribution is required nor is there any licence to occupy.
Please help alleviate the loneliness of an older person by donating towards the building of our Abbeyfield House, its fit-out and landscaping.
If you attend Waimakariri markets you will find us selling jams and chutneys at the Church Street Market, Rangiora, on the first Saturday of each month (except January), as well as at some local fairs.
Follow our Abbeyfield Waimakariri Facebook page to keep up with other fund-raising events.
Building an Abbeyfield House in Rangiora to accommodate 14 independent seniors in a family-style environment.
The purpose-built house will offer an affordable rent, a private ensuite studio, cooked meals, companionship, communal areas, safety and security.
Building an Abbeyfield House is expected to cost about $4m, which will come from volunteer fundraising, individual donations, grants and a mortgage.
We have the land and now need your help in donating to our community fundraising target of $350,000.
