Floyd the school dog needs your help

  • A final thank you from Floyd The School Dog

      8 August 2018

In two days time this give a little page comes to an end. I can't express how grateful we are to all who have contributed. God bless you all. Floyd is doing really well, back to his happy tail wagging self. It was his seventh birthday on 1st August and at the beginning of this year we thought perhaps he might not make it until then. The amazing vets and staff at Pet Vet Lower Hutt have given Floyd the chance at living a long and healthy life. And you, his supporters, have helped us to pay the vets for their work. Floyd continues to visit schools and libraries in Lower Hutt, bringing the dog safety message to the children. Hopefully for many years to come. Thank you all. Perhaps one day we will meet on Petone beach or at the Hutt River. xxx

  • The Finale

      8 July 2018

On Wednesday 4th July Floyd received his last chemotherapy treatment. Again the dose was halved to reduce the chance of his white cell count dropping to a critical level, leaving him very immune suppressed. He is doing really well, with no obvious side affects. A blood test in two weeks time to check his cell count and maybe that will be his last visit to his vet for a while. If all the surgeries, medications and treatments have done their job, Floyd has the chance to live a long and healthy life. As I write this, he is laying in front of the fire with his two cat siblings. So nice to see him relaxed and happy and most of all ... well ! Thank you everyone for your donations. Every little bit helps us to provide Floyd with the vet care he so deserves. xxx

  • Another set back !

      22 June 2018

Floyd was booked in for his final chemo treatment on Wednesday 20th June, but alas, once again, his white cell count was critically low. Antibiotics as a precaution so he is less likely to pick up another infection while he is so immune suppressed. Hopefully he will be well enough in two weeks time to receive his sixth and final treatment. Floyd sends doggy kisses to all his friends xxx

  • five out of six complete

      5 June 2018

Floyd received his fifth chemo treatment on Wednesday 30 May. All went very smoothly with no significant side effects. A blood test is scheduled for Friday 8th June to check his cell count hasn't dropped to dangerous levels again. All going well he will receive his final treatment on 20 June and hopefully go on to live a long and healthy life. With donor support and a maxed out visa card all vet bills have been met so far. Some of you we know and others are new friends. God bless every one of you.

  • A hiccup in the treatment plan

      14 May 2018

Floyd was due to have his fifth chemo treatment on the 9th May, but unfortunately he had developed an infection the Thursday before which made him very unwell. His Neutrophil level had dropped to 0.17 when normal is between 3 and 6. With no immunity to fight bacteria he became gravely ill. His temp soared to 40 and he was weak and vomiting. Friday saw him admitted to doggy hospital on a hefty dose of IV antibiotics. 48 hours later his temp came down and he perked up. Since then he has regained his health. Neutrophils almost back to normal and tail full of wag again. A hefty vet bill to pay but sooo worth it for our fabulous boy. Thanks to all who have donated to assist us with his ongoing vet expenses. Two more chemo treatments to get through !

  • Fourth Chemo treatment today

      18 April 2018

I'm pacing around the house knowing that Floyd is, at this time, receiving his fourth Chemo treatment. A couple of close friends said I should share with his supporters, a poem I wrote about Floyd, a few weeks ago. So here it is.....

    FLOYD

An ode to Floyd, I must surely write,

I'll do it now, this very night,

Because he is, the bestest one,

Our long legged, golden, furry son.

He is a friend, to one and all,

Be man or beast, he'll heed the call,

To loyal friendship, calm and true,

He'll snuggle up, to comfort you.

Our Floyd, he is a clever boy,

Who knows the name, of every toy,

    Chewy, Rabbit, Duck Duck too,

Rope and ball and a stick to chew.

His Auntie V, takes him to school,

To teach the kids, the golden rule,

Stray dogs they should, stay well away,

When they go out, with friends to play.

The river is, his favourite place,

    Running, swimming, rabbits to chase,

And the beach he loves, can you believe,

A stick to swim out, to retrieve.

But Floyd, our boy, our bestest one,

Our long legged, golden, furry son,

Has got the cancer, he is not well,

How long he'll live, we can not tell.

The vet has done surgeries, one and two,

Chemotherapy, the next best thing to do,

To give our boy, a chance to be well,

The alternative is something, we will not dwell.

We love and care for him, the right thing to do,

The vet bills we pay, with a little help from you,

Friends of our Floyd boy, have come to our aid,

With surgeries one and two, now paid.

So here I will leave, my ode to Floyd,

A too long poem, I try to avoid,

Because he is our very, VERY, bestest one,

Our long legged, golden, furry son.

  • Two down four to go

      27 March 2018

Floyd received his second dose of chemotherapy on 21st March. Unfortunately he wasn't quite as well afterwards as he was with his first treatment. 24 hours of diarrhea and two days not eating. A sad boy with no bounce and wag at all. But... the next day back to his usual happy self. He is so well now, a week later, that tomorrow he is off to do a school visit with his auntie Virginia. So happy that he can continue his school visits while undergoing his treatment. Next chemo on 4th April if his blood cell count is high enough.

  • First chemotherapy treatment

      9 March 2018

Floyd received his first chemotherapy treatment on Wednesday 7th March. Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou to all who have donated to Floyd's fund. We are very humbled by the wonderful support and aroha shown to us via this give-a-little page. Godwilling, Floyd will be able to continue his work, bringing the dog safety message to children, for many years to come. He is coping well with treatment. A little more sleepy than usual but still has his happy wagging tail and is eating well. His second chemo treatment is on 21st March. We pray that he will remain well throughout.
