Please help this poor lady get the surgery she needs to survive. Vietnam has no free hospital care. She is a dearly loved nana and mum.
Waikato
My son Michael & his partner Tam live in Vietnam ,where he teaches english language in schools and supports his little family of 3 girls, Hang[Sumo], Ellissa and Mikayla. They have been helped enormously by Tams mum and dad who although very poor, work hard and care very much for their only daughter, and care for the children when Tam & Michael have to work.
Tams mum ,who they call Bongwai [nana] has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and told she must have a mastectomy and radiation if she is to survive. This costs around $2000 to 3000 USA, and perhaps ongoing treatment if she does well. There's no free hospital care in Vietnam, and this sort of money is huge to them, they could borrow from loan sharks who charge enormous interest which could cost them their home, their only asset.
We have given as much as we can afford, but are already helping them financially as Michael has had no work for 12 weeks due to schools being shut for Covid 19. No government aid is available to them.
It seems terrible to us,safe in our kind little country, that someone can literally be left to die for lack of a few thousand dollars, but Michael & Tam tell me that's exactly what will happen.
Michael knows it is his duty to care for Tams parents for life -that is their custom, and theres no old age pension or help for the elderly. Ongwai and Bongwai [nana & poppa] survived the Vietnam war but with visible scars, he lost his business after the war and was a prisoner.
This illness of his wife is a hard thing for him to deal with, hes so sad that he cannot afford to save her. We would all be so very grateful for your help, every $1 counts.
Bongwai[this means nana] is my son Mikeys Vietnamese mother in law. Mikey lives in Vietnam with his 3 children and his partner Tam. Her mum has breast cancer but has been told it will cost $2000-3000 USA for her mastectomy and radiation treatment.
Hospital surgery [mastectomy] follow up care and 10 days radiation treatment. Any excess will be used to pay for the ongoing treatment of Mrs Bui Thi Thu Huong. Should she die, any excess will go to her granddaughters education [also not free in Vietnam].
Bongwai sends amazed & grateful thanks 14 May 2020
Bongwai has had her first surgery, and is waiting on further treatment. She sends her heartfelt thanks and expresses amazement that strangers in another country are helping her. We still need more to keep up her treatment but are so grateful to NZ.
Bless you and thank you so much.xx
