World Record-holding, PARA Ice Swimmer from Dunedin, selected to represent New Zealand (the Frozen Ferns) in Molveno, Italy in January 2025.
Dunedin, Otago
The International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) was founded in 2009, introducing the unique sport of Ice Swimming. This involves swimming in water temperatures of 5.0°C or less, unassisted, with only a silicon cap, a pair of goggles, and a standard swimming costume. With members from 73 countries and Ice Swimmers (1km+) from 43 countries, IISA’s vision is to establish Ice Swimming as a winter Olympic sport.
I am a PARA Ice Swimmer with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A) from Dunedin. I hold the PARA World Records for the 1000m, 500m, and 250m freestyle events. I set these records in Alexandra, swimming in an outdoor pool with water temperatures of 2.1°C in July 2024.
I am one of only 561 individuals worldwide who has completed an Ice Mile, which entails swimming 1.6km in water temperatures of 5.0°C or less. I achieved my first Ice Mile last year at Blue Lake, Saint Bathans (Central Otago), in 3.3°C water.
I have been selected to represent New Zealand (the Frozen Ferns) at the IISA’s 6th World Championship from the 13th to the 19th of January 2025, in Molveno, Italy, where I aim to defend my PARA World Records. To turn this dream into reality, I need to raise $9,500.
Your support would greatly assist me in covering the costs associated with travelling, accommodation, swimming gear and participation in this event.
Thank You 22 January 2025
The Molveno Swimming campaign has wrapped up, and I want to extend a huge thank you to all my supporters—without you, this adventure wouldn’t have been possible. A special shout-out to Dean and Jeff—your generous backing kept me afloat (pun intended) and was incredibly appreciated!
Now, for the results breakdown:
• 1000m: Gold 🥇 (Turns out I like long swims!)
• 500m: Gold 🥇 (Apparently, medium swims too!)
• 250m: Silver 🥈 (The sprint specialists showed up!)
• 100m: Bronze 🥉 (Blink, and you’d have missed me.)
• 50m: 5th place (Too much time waving at the crowd, clearly.)
The journey home kicks off tonight, and I’ll be back in Dunedin by Friday—ready for normal life, warmer swims, and the occasional stingray encounter.
For more details about the week’s adventures, check out my daily posts on Facebook. Thanks again to everyone who made this incredible experience possible!
