Give a little to help those going hungry through COVID-19. We will use funds raised to buy basic food parcels for people in need.
Nationwide
We established Friends In Need, a free community network, to help our elderly and vulnerable neighbours through the COVID-19 restriction period.
We started out match-making each person 'In Need' who contacted us with a volunteer 'Helper' in their immediate neighbourhood, to check in on them with daily phone calls and/or to do essential supplies shopping on their behalf.
However, we are increasingly receiving calls for help from people who need emergency food parcels. We have had referrals from Government and Council helplines who cannot fulfil requests quickly enough, and existing food banks are stretched beyond capacity. Many of the people contacting us have lost their incomes in the past weeks but face a long delay before their welfare requests are processed. Others are on benefits but just cannot make ends meet. They and their children are going hungry, and they are isolated and afraid.
Friends In Need must respond to this emerging crisis, and so we are asking our amazing community of supporters to donate to enable us to provide basic food parcels for these New Zealanders. We will simply be taking pressure off the existing food banks and charities, and supporting these families until their welfare payments come through.
Every dollar donated will go directly to buying food parcels. The money will go into a charitable trust account administered independently, and we will report back to the community as to how every donated dollar is spent.
More details will be available on our Neighbourly and Facebook community pages, and on our website www.friendsinneednz.com.
We started this initiative on 21 March in response to the restrictions imposed by COVID-19. However, as an unincorporated society, we do not have our own Friends In Need account so we wish to use this existing, independent charitable trust bank account.
We will use funds to buy basic food boxes for those 'in need' people who cannot afford to buy essential supplies.
Closing date ofr donations 21 May 2020
Hi all
We have closed our page to new donations with effect from tonight, as Friends In Need will wind down in Alert Level 2.
To date we have spent $18,165.25, of the $19,902.68 you have so generously donated (after deduction of the Givealittle service fee).
We are still receiving many, many requests for emergency deliveries of food and toiletries, so will continue to apply the remaining funds towards these requests.
We are connecting all families contacting us with other charities and food banks who can support them at this alert level until their employment resumes or they begin receiving WINZ assistance.
Thank you so much for making this initiative possible. Were will keep you updated with details of the households your donations have supported, and some sample messages of support form the recipient families, in the coming weeks.
