Funding required for new cancer drugs unfunded by Pharmac in NZ

$3,940 of $45,000 goal
Given by 22 generous donors in around 6 months

I need to raise $45,000.00 (new lower target!) to cover this year's costs for Ibrance and fulvestrant. These drugs are not funded by Pharmac

Wellington

I am 56 years old and I was first diagnosed with primary breast cancer in 2007 at age 44. I underwent all the treatment offered at the time and was happy and clear for six years.

In 2013 I was told that the beast had come back in my bones, sacrum. Literally a pain in my arse!.

I was doing really well on Letrozole for five years and then last November had some progression in the same place. I had some radiation and a change to the drugs I was on. The progression has just continued and it has moved a little up my spine and into my skull (right forehead and a little at the back)

I now need to move to drugs that are not funded in NZ (they are completely funded in UK and Aus where they run a better and kinder model than Pharmac in NZ)

Ibance and Fulvestrant are the only types of drugs I can take now. Back in 2007 the original chemo severely damaged my heart and I now have a pacemaker and a severely enlarged heart which is being managed by other specialists working with my cancer team. I am so grateful to them.

I seems I am a good very drug taker (lol) and respond well each time to newer options. I know that these newer advanced drugs will help me.

I was always an active person and have worked hard and paid my way. It is galling to have to ask for help - but I so want to live for longer, I love my life, family and want to enjoy my new home in Carterton for a whole lot longer. I have a garden to build and much to do.

My family needs me, We have already lost my father and my older sister to cancer. My mother has dementia and we need to be here to help for her. She doesn't really understand.

Use of funds

Purchase of monthly drugs to contain my cancer. Any surplus will go to other women who need assistance.

Funding has been approved by Govt - But pharmac are dragging their heels  9 September 2019

Hi family and friends,

sorry this is a long post but I really need your help (again), it should only take 5 minutes of your time 🙏

We need to act fast though, this needs to be done before the end of THIS week!

I'm response to the great news that Fulvestrant will be funded it has now come to light that this will not happen for the best part of a year! I am currently paying $1000.00 per month for this drug.

So we are lobbying Pharmac now to push for funding to happen a lot quicker than this.

Could I ask you to help me by sending a quick email to Pharmac?

This needs to be done by the end of this week.

Below are the things you need to mention (1-4).

1. I fully support this proposal to fund Fulvestrant

2. I know a close friend/family etc who needs this immediately

3. Please provide this funding now under Section 29 of the Medicines Act

4. Ask Medsafe to FAST TRACK it’s approval processes for Fulvestrant

Feel free to add any personal message regarding myself and many other New Zealand women dealing with the stress and burden of financing this and of course those others who simply cannot afford to due to the cost.

Please email consult@pharmac.govt.nz

Use the heading on your email RESPONSE TO FULVESTRANT CONSULTATION

Thanks so much for reading this far and helping if you can.
