Money needed for Fay to go to Urgent Vet for 24/7 monitoring with a chest drain as well as medicines needed.
Wellington
On Thursday the 25th of March in the evening we noticed Fay sounded a little wheezy and was acting rather strange, it didn't seem urgent at the time so we decided to sit the night out and get her to the vet in the morning.
So, Friday morning, Fay was struggling to breath, so we rushed her to Animates Paraparaumu early in the day. At this time they thought it was just an mild infection so gave her some fluid, oxygen and Anti-biotics and told me to come in if I couldn't get her to have them or if her condition got worse. They weren't sure why she was breathing so extremely but she was getting oxygen just fine at the time, so they weren't worried. (This bill was $189.07)
Saturday was a nightmare, she was still breathing very badly but we thought we could sit it out, I rang the emergency vet and they recommended I go visit but all our local vets were full on this day (my vet is currently shut on weekends) so we kept a very close eye on her till Sunday.
Sunday morning I went to give medicine to her but she just dribbled it back out instantly and gagged a bit, she was breathing with her mouth open now so we rushed her down to the emergency vet (1 hour away from us). When we got there, we were told she was not looking very good and they they'd need to run a bunch of tests that would work out to be around $900-$1000 and by the end we still might not come home with a cat. We were very upset by this as we couldn't afford it but we were told to go home and wait for a phone call in a few hours for an update. In this time I tried to scrounge up any money I had and borrow from family and friends, we managed to get about $480 together.
We got the phone call in the early afternoon that she was actually fine to come home and they all the tests aren't gonna be needed as they worked out what the issue is. Turns out Fay has a much more serious infection than initially thought and needed 250ml (1 cup) of pus drained from just outside her lung. We were given new antibiotics for her and were told to come pick her up but she'd need more appointments at our local vet for more draining's. Her breathing was much more stable at this point and she was able to get oxygen. This bill ended up costing around $428.14.
We went back to our local vet on Tuesday to get Fay's lung drained for the second time (first after the emergency one). She still had a high temperate which had barely gone down and had lost weight due to not eating. We had to get more fluids given to her as well as pay for different painkillers. But we were once again able to take her home. This bill was $206.47
Present:
Fay will be going to the vet again today for another Draining and whatever else is needed, I expect this bill to cost anywhere from $160-$200
Her breathing still isn't quite normal but she is perking up a bit and gaining more energy as the days go by.
However, the bills are getting very tough to manage and we are struggling to get money together to pay for them.
Fortunately, our vet uses a payment system called 'Laybuy' which allows us to fully pay the vet and payback 'Laybuy' within 6 instalments, the first being required immediately. Unfortunately, Laybuy has a limit of how much you can have on it at a time, we can only put another $500 through it. But that said, I am well past my limit of what I can afford weekly whilst still being able to buy food for her and myself. I was only able to get this far thanks to the people around me pitching in what they could.
We are unsure how many more visits she will need, hopefully not many.
But so far the bill is $823.68 and will be past $1000 after todays appointment. She will 100% have to go back for at least another checkup or two, even if she doesn't need another draining.
Fay's vet bills so that we can continue to get infection drained from her Lung area to make sure she has a healthy recovery and doesn't go back downhill and die.
If we exceed our target I will donate the rest to the SPCA.
Sad News 3 April 2021
Thank you all for donating, it allowed us to get as far as we could with little Fay and trying to diagnose, treat & cure her.
Sadly, we had to let Fay cross the rainbow bridge this evening.
We took her to the vet this morning, as per the plan she had her lung drained alongside the usual. We then had to wait for a phone call for another quote on a chest drain, which ended up being $2000-$3000 just till Tuesday, with a result that is not guaranteed to help or stop there, the draining might've had to continue.
So we ended up doing some tests first to see if something else was the cause - after a double plate x-ray of her chest it was revealed her lungs and heart area were so full of liquid & pass that her heart could barely be seen on x-ray, let alone anything else.
At this point we were at the clinic trying to work out the next move, we had an extensive talk with the vet and after watching Fay still really struggling to breathe and observing how weak she was. We were advised that it's probably for the best to have her euthanized at this point.
Even if we did the chest drain, with how weak she'd become and the fact that the lung drains every day weren't working, making her condition only get worse, that she likely wouldn't survive the procedure or what followed it.
Today she had 75mls drained from her lung which is 25ml more than last time, her temperature and other symptoms had only gotten worse, too.
We had her on 3 antibiotics, pain relief and cage rest alongside constant monitoring but no matter what she seemed to only get worse.
At the least, she'd perked up a lot and wanted affection but this must've just been due to the pain relief.
She'd lost a lot of weight despite special vet food and wouldn't drink water by itself.
We are incredibly sad to let such an amazing, loving little girl go but we couldn't put her through anymore suffering.
I only had her for 5 months, but I hope the home she had for that time was a happy one.
Unfortunately, most of her life she was ill, before we adopted her, she'd had cat flu for the first 7 months of her life.
Thank you all for your kind messages and for the donations, you made getting as far as we did with Fay possible. Thank you for believing in Fay and for your thoughts and prayers for her.
Just under $2000 or so was spent on her vetcare in the past week.
We will be closing donations now but again, thank you all very much. If there ends up being any spare money leftover, I will donate it to the SPCA which is the shelter I adopted her from and hope they can use it to save more kitties just like her.
