Family in need of recovery assistance and life style rebuild

Tolaga Bay, Gisborne

When cyclone Gabrielle came she took everything from our family of six. My self and husband (both in our 30s ) my two kids 11 ND 4 yrs old. My parents both 63. All living on the same lifestyle block in small tolaga bay north of gisborne. Two separate dwellings. My husband and I lost our renovated shearer quarters (tiny home) everything inside and out destroyed by slash mud and extreme water rage! Our belongings and lifestyle are gone! stock and veggie gardens included. All extra means of living and our lifestyle destroyed in one go.

My parents lost stock land and fences again. They are hoping to retire on this land in the near future but right now it is and unprofitable mess! This has happened multiple time over the last ten years but never to this extent where our property has been destroyed by slash and forestry waste. As we are not a farm (just a life style block) we have struggled with government grants and supports. All of us are feeling deflated beaten, in need of an end to a disaster and a sight of recovery near. Unfortunately insurance is minimal.

The forestry will help but in their own time and since 2018 we have been told empty promises of their help!

PROGRESS  2 May 2023

We have started the long process of renovating/building the other part of the old shearer quarters. Need some dry weather to set the piles. Still have a long way to go.

The farm has a little more access as we've been lent a digger. Managed to clear a little slash and make some tracks.

The road to recovery is still so far away. We still need a home to live in for my husband myself and out children. Grass seed and slash removal for the stock fences to hold them all in.

We as a family are greatfull for the donations received. From the bottom of our hearts thank you
