My friend Gary needs to take a few months off work to battle his cancer, which will obviously have a huge financial impact on his family.
Bayview, Auckland
You may remember last year I ran a fundraiser for my friend Gary Dooley, who is battling Stage 4 bowel and liver cancer. Since then he has made great progress, but now he needs to take a few months off work to focus all his energy on fighting the disease.
Latest update from Gary:
"Mid-February I will find out if the cancer from my liver is gone. Then, if it is, we can really fight the primary level 4 advanced Bowel Cancer. I've been on tramadol for 7 months due to the intense pain of all of it.
When I get over this, and there is a good chance, (put it this way, doctors have stopped trying not to cry when discussing my diagnosis, so that's good, right?) I'll go back to fully doing what I love.
Docs have said I should be off work until May, unfortunately there are almost too many hoops to jump through to get a sickness benefit.
I am just focused on surviving for my babies, Charlie is incredibly understanding for a 6 year old, Bella has the biggest heart but being on the autism spectrum means it has been the hardest on her. I just get bloody sick sometimes. Anyway, I bloody miss people. Cool. Later, Chemosabe."
So any money you can spare would make a huge difference.
Gary has been a close friend of mine for over 15 years
Gary will be off work until at least May, so the money will be spent on bills, rent etc, allowing him to focus on fighting cancer.

In case you don’t follow Gary on social media, here’s his latest update:
If you're wondering why I haven't given a cancer update, I'm just waiting for one myself. I have a phone appointment on Wednesday.
Obviously I haven't had specific treatment for my bowel cancer, yet, but we're hoping the secondary bowel cancer of the liver is 100% gone. Better be, don't have that much liver to get rid of.
No scans booked, yet. Wednesday is earliest appointment can be as there's still technically two more days left in this 'chemo cycle'. There's been 166 days of this run, so what is tu mour?
Latest round of chemo done for now. 24 weeks worth is a lot. More to come, I guess? I'll let you know.
