Horse education desperately needed in Fiji
Canterbury
Gau is an island just off the coast of Fiji. The Fiji government sent 32 horses to the island to ease a transport burden for the farmers. Good idea but this is the first time horses have ever been on this island so many people are seeing, touching and caring for horses for the first time. The level of knowledge of horses and horse care in Fiji is very poor and 4 of the horses on Gau have died through a lack of care and knowledge.
I am a horse professional from Christchurch, New Zealand and I have a lot of experience in horse care and welfare, horse behaviour and training, hoof care and trimming and teaching horse riding. I collect 2nd hand horse riding equipment from around New Zealand and freight it to Fiji for donation into the poor villages. I have visited many villages in Fiji teaching horse care.
Once I became aware of the situation for the horses on Gau I contacted the Fiji Ministry of Agriculture and I have permission to go to the island and spend 1-2 weeks staying there and teaching the village people about horses. I am planning to go the the island 22 November 2019. I am already in Nadi, all the equipment has arrived via Fiji Airways and it is about to be released by biosecurity following the fumigation process. I am really excited to be going to the island and helping these horses.
Return airline ticket $750, Travel Insurance $100, Air freight for equipment $500, fumigation fees $250, customs clearance fees, $150. Some food and Accommodation
