Whilst I have some strengths computer wizardry is certainly not one of them.

Thus with only 3 days left before this fundraising site draws to a close I have just worked out how to say thank you individually to everyone who has given money in the donation section.

Da Daaaaar, not only can I ride my bike over a big hill but I can say thank you too!xx

    Dear all,

Well what can I say?!! I am quite stunned and very grateful for everyone's very generous support of my fundraiser.

I met up with some of the Napier Women's Refuge team last week which I felt quite privileged to do. I was able to have a chat with them about their service and how busy it is with no sign of slowing down.

I was clearly able to see the demands of my ride were but a drop in the bucket compared to what these ladies cope with day in and day out all year round.

So again Refuge team, and indeed Refuge Teams across the country, I salute you all.

I have floated an idea with the Refuge Team that we might be able to set them up with some bikes for the families to use for some light relief which they are keen to explore. So whilst this fundraiser will end in a few days time the cycling connection with their team looks like it will endure. The Gentle Annie has many silver linings.

    Cheers all and thank you!!!

    Hello everyone!

Well I finished the race in a time of 6 hours and 4 minutes!!!...4th in the group of women....138 km with just on 2500 metres climbed on my computer. My lower back and numb feet were ringing out in discomfort at the finish line and I was very happy to dismount, straighten up and release my feet from the constrains of my bike shoes!

We had a great gang of 4 cyclists working together and my husband George was a trojan as he led the group nearly all the way shielding us from the wind.

A bag of jet planes, 3 muesli bars and 2 bananas fuelled my engine along the way and some gorgeous friends stoked us up with more sweets and coffee at the 90km mark.

Whoa I can tell you when my folks kindly drove us over the Gentle Annie to Taihape the day before my palms were sweating. This has not occurred before when checking out the race circuit such was my awe at the size of the hills through the Kaimanawa and Kaweka ranges. The hills did not disappoint and my anxiety was justified for there was "no speakies" as we made our ascents...we were all just concentrating on forward motion while breathing!! There was quite a lot of light hearted banter when the few welcome flat sections occurred and it was great knowing I was earning $10 for every kilometre pedalled!!

Rest day today and road bikes out to pasture for a break as well.

Here are some pictures en route with our gang of 4 and the final women's results.

Cheers everyone and thank you so much for donations.

  • 2 more sleeps until race day!

Well only 2 more sleeps before Race day and I am nervous now! The road cycle is polished up and snug in its stable having only the best racehorse food money can buy.

Wow thanks everyone, as of today there is $1300 in the kitty which has well surpassed the $500 mark I hoped we might reach. As Mum said to me I am now earning $10 with every km I ride so I'll keep that in mind with every downward stroke of my cranks on Saturday!

I was speaking to a staff member from the Napier Women's Refuge and she told me how delighted they are for the fundraiser. It always gives them a boost when someone does a fundraiser as it reminds them that people in the community do care about their service.

Yes indeed the community does care Team Refuge for everyone I have talked to keeps telling me what a worthy cause to support. Keep up the good work, for the community is certainly grateful to you for providing the important service that you do (:

Attached is a picture I took out on a training ride on the weekend looking towards the Kaweka ranges inland from Napier. What a fabulous, peaceful landscape to ride through. There aren't too many of those on the planet so hooray for NZ!

cheers all, I'll report back after the race now....

Wow awesome!!!!! Thank you so much everyone for backing this old horse and our Women's Refuge!!

What a fabulous response, thank you everyone for your generosity.

Would you believe the winning cyclist, Alex West, did the 2017 race in a time of 3 hours 43 minutes?!!Amazing! And equally awesome was the winning female cyclist last year, Kirsty McCallum, who did it in a time of 4 hours 40 minutes. Unbelievably fast given the terrain and climbing required!! Tour de France riders eat your hearts out!!

Whilst I have been training for several months I can safely tell you all I am training for my crusade with blazing New Zealand Olympic effort now (:

I am now alternating road cycling, mountain biking and tricycle cycling every day for I have a huge incentive to just make it to the finish line as I'm riding for The Girls!!!!

    cheers all

    Anna
