Gerard O'Grady's lost a leg, sight in 1 eye & is facing 2 years rehab following a motorcycle crash - he needs our help

  • October progress update

      12 October 2015

I went to see Gerard on Friday and he is making good progress.

The cast has come off his left leg - he is now in a moon boot and learning to take his weight and stand on his left leg.

Ged is due to get a prosthetic for the right leg on 21/10/15 and start learning to walk again.

He got new glasses yesterday so should be able to see clearly with his left eye.

Ged's left hand is still all bunched up as the tendons were affected in the operations on his left arm; he is working daily on stretching the tendons to regain the proper use of his hand.

Ged's been making great progress following the head injury - almost back to his old self.

He has a very positive oulook and is concentrating on his rehab but gets depressed when thinking about the future - please keep up ph calls/texts/visits to help keep Ged positive.

    Gerards mobile is 0210627530

He is now in House 5 at ABI Rehabilitation Centre, 180 Metcalf Road, Ranui.

Will probably be ther another 6-8 weeks.

After 75 days in hospital and many operations Gerard has now moved into a rehabilitation centre and has been there for a week now.

Gerard turns 49 on Monday 29th September - it would be awesome if people could visit him or call/text him to show support.

He is in House 1 at ABI Rehabilitation Centre, 180 Metcalf Road, Ranui.

    Gerards mobile is 0210627530.

Gerard is being very positive about the rehabilitation ahead.

He has started to take weight on his left leg and the cast comes of that leg next week.

Ged will soon be fitted for a prosthetic leg and learn to start walking again.

The doctors informed Ged last week that due to the head injury he has permanent loss of vision in his right eye.

Gerard has lost 50kg since going into hospital and is now sporting a beard.

Please call him Monday - he needs everyone's support

  • 17/8/15 Bad news on Geds leg

      17 August 2015

Due to infection in Ged's right leg the doctors have made the decision to amputate.

Gerard could really do with your support now - he is currently in Ward 77 Auckland Hospital for anyone that can visit him.

  • 31/7/15 new leg operation

      31 July 2015

    Caron just advised:

Ged has an operation today because his metal plate in his leg is infected.

They are going to try and build a frame around the leg to try and fix it rather than the metal plate.

Increased chances now of losing his foot if it dosn't work.

Poor chappie, last night he just cried and cried cos he couldn't get comfortable. Kevin and Maeve are going up tomorrow and I'm going up today after the op.

Ged is in Middlemore hospital ward 10 if anyone is able to visit him.

  • 1 month after Jeds accident

      16 July 2015

Jeds back at Middlemore Hospital ward 35 north.

His memory is still scrambled from the head injuries and he has undergone many, many operations for the multiple fraactures he has suffered.

It's going to be a long road to recovery, thanks for all the support to date - he'll be needing all the help he can get.

What Jed really needs now is some visitors - it would be great for him to see friends to assist his recovery and relieve the monotony.

    Many thanks

  • Thanks for your generosity

      3 July 2015

I went to visit Gerard on Wednesday and he was in good spirits, happy for the visit.

Somewhat disorientated still though and wanting to climb out of bed several times - not a good idea with broken legs and arms.

Kept talking about getting stronger and fitter which is a great mindset for him to have.

I passed on everyone's love which made him happy.

Jeds been transferred back to Middlemore Hospital now for another skin graft operation, he's had plenty of ops now poor fella.

Thanks for all the generous donations - I think Gerard is going to need all the help we can give for his rehabilitation.
