Bushra & Nada want to return home from Iran where they are trapped in lockdown in a city remote from family/friends. No $. No internet. Dire
Wellington
Bushra is a New Zealand citizen. She came to New Zealand from Iran as a refugee in 2003. She has two daughters Sahra and Nada. In early February 2020 she and Nada who is 15, went to visit a sick relative in Qom, Iran. Qom is now the epicentre of Covid 19 infections in Iran. After a few weeks Bushra and Nada went to the city of Isafhan and were then trapped by the nationwide lockdown. They have friends there but the friends cannot help with money or accomodation. They have rented an apartment but have no bank account or internet access. Bushra and Nada want to come back to New Zealand before flights cease operating. They had return tickets to NZ with Emirates who now are not flying out of Tehran. Bushra will get around $1,000 refund from them but we do not know when. (This refund is included in our calculations)
Bushra works part time as the cleaner for St Hilda's Anglican Church in Island Bay where I am a leader. We are working with a group of people including Hamed Taghadosi who is an Iranian working for TVNZ in Auckland. He heard Bushra's story on TVNZ News. Hamed is now working with friends in Iran to help Bushra. His friends in Isafhan are organising a taxi to take Bushra and Nada to Tehran airport to connect with a Qatar flight back to Wellington. Flights from Tehran will cease soon.
Bushra has no funds and no access to funds.
I am a friend facilitating getting Bushra and daughter Nada back to NZ from Iran
We need approximately $8,000 to pay for taxi in Iran, flights to Auckland and incidentals. Any funds in excess of what is needed will be donated to Red Cross Refugees service.
Home at last 2 May 2020
Hi again
Bushra and Nada are back home in Wellington after 2 weeks in quarantine in Auckland. Nada says it was pretty boring but that they were very well looked after. Janene and I just had a video chat with them and their smiles say it all. They are SO HAPPY to be back. Sahra said, "I could not have done this without all you guys helping. Thank you all SO MUCH".
They are chilling out at home. What do they want to do today? "Go to McDonalds!"
We set out to collect $8,450 and you generously gave $8,690! We collected $287 in excess of what was needed to get them home. This will be given to the Red Cross Refugee service, as promised in our appeal.
This is the last update for awhile. St Hilda's Island Bay will probably put on a welcoming home party when we are allowed to meet publically again. We'll send you an invite when that happens!
Cheers
Jonathan
