Get Jess to the Global Young Leaders Conference

Hi everyone!

My name is Jess and I am the Head Girl at One Tree Hill College. This year I have been invited to attend the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington DC, USA. In July I will be travelling by myself to the states for 12 days, working alongside people from over 80 other countries. I was invited to this conference as a result of my keen interest in global citizenship, foreign affairs, politics, public policy, and international relations. The GYLC takes place from June 30 – July 12 and would allow me to explore cultural differences firsthand, extend my diplomatic skills and grow as a young global leader, all whilst making life-long friendships with like-minded people from around the world.

Last year was an exceptional time of growth for my leadership skills, as I represented the Maungakiekie electorate as the Youth Member of Parliament for 2019. In this role I had a 6-month tenure of responsibility, where I organised community events, connected with like-minded youth, undertook surveys to better understand the concerns of youth in my electorate, and finished with a 3 day conference at the New Zealand Parliament Buildings in Wellington, where myself and 119 other young people represented our regions across a variety of general and legislative debates and specialised select committees. I was a member of the Education and Workforce Select Committee and spoke on the topic of Youth Mental Health in the general debate. This conference and role was a great representation of what it is like working in the heart of politics and diplomacy, and I believe has prepared me well for something like the GYLC.

This opportunity is a once in a lifetime chance, however with this prestige comes a price tag.

During my summer break, I worked full-time to raise my own share of money for the trip, but am hoping to raise the other half through scholarships and generous donations from people like you!
