Help the Brickley's see Grandad after his serious burns accident
Manawatu / Whanganui
On 8th February 2020 (UK time) Thomas Brickley (my Grandad) was refilling his lighter with lighter fluid when he accidentally pressed the igniter. This caused the lighter fluid can to explode all over him, burning him from chin to waist. The heat was that intense that all of his clothes melted off him, only his shirt collar was left. Even his poor dog Pedro was slightly singed from the explosion (Pedro is fine). Luckily there is minimal damage to his house.
He has burns on 45% of his upper body (20% of his total body) and is currently in an induced coma in a special burns unit due to the severity of his wounds. He has undergone a few operations so far to cut away some of the worst burnt areas of his body but he has a long road ahead, and as he is in his 80's, we are worried about the stress on his heart from the shock, pain and medication.
My Dad, Mum, and myself are the only members of our family in New Zealand - everyone else is in England. My father (Thomas' son) needs to renew his passport and he can't get paid time off work due to his job. We would really love to go and support Grandad and the rest of the family back home in the UK but money is really tight for all of us. We are worried sick and feel helpless being so far away from our family in their time of need. We haven't seen Grandad since we moved to New Zealand 14 years ago and would love to be able to see him just in case he doesn't make it. Flights currently start from $1,650 NZD return and we need to cover a few weeks of Dad's leave without pay.
Every dollar (or pound) is greatly appreciated! If we raise more money than we need, the rest will go towards Grandad's rehabilitation as he will have a long road to recovery ahead if he survives these next few days.
Dave is my father, and my injured Grandad's son
Emergency passports, return flights and bills relating to Grandad's treatment. May also be used for accommodation near the burns unit
Update 6 21 March 2020
Kia Ora peeps.
We just wanted to say a huge thank you (again) to everyone who sent us messages, gave donations, aroha, and well wishes. Even if you didn’t know me or my family personally, you still helped and we appreciate it all.
Dad arrived home and safe a few weeks ago (luckily before Covid-19 was spreading) after spending some much needed time with the family back home in the UK. Unfortunately dad didn’t get to go to Grandads funeral in person but he was able to watch a livestream and he had a chance to say goodbye to him in person before leaving.
It was bloody hard for me and mum to be stuck here away from the rest of the family, going to work every day and keeping the place running when we wanted to be there.
We just wanted to have a final post now that Grandad has been laid to rest and is with his late wife Annie. We have a small tribute to him in the kitchen that everyone can see as soon as they walk in the door. The metal lamp was one that he used to take into the coal mines.
Rest In Peace Thomas Paul Brickley. I hope we’ve all done you proud
