Representing NZ at the World Stand Up Paddle and Paddleboarding Championships in Sayulita in Mexico this May
Gisborne
ABOUT ME
I’m 18 years old from Wainui Beach in Gisborne New Zealand. I’ve been Paddleboarding competitively for Wainui surf club since I was 12.
This year so far I have made two New Zealand Junior development squads and one New Zealand team for three different sports. Surfing, Surf lifesaving, and paddle boarding. I am hoping to make the NZ teams for surfing and surf lifesaving later on in the year. All three sports are super beneficial for one another for example Paddleboarding has taught me how to be competitive and how to win and make quick decisions under pressure where surfing has taught me how to read the ocean and how to work with and not against mother nature. So even though I’m trying to competing internationally in three different sports, when it comes to training whatever I’m doing whether its board training or surfing it’s all valuable
Over the past 3 years I've represented NZ in Surfing and surf lifesaving at the world champs.
Last year I was selected to represent New Zealand in Surfing and Surf lifesaving. I finished 9th overall in the UN18 Girls division at the ISA World Junior Surfing champs in Ecuador. I then flew to Sumbawa in Indonesia where I competed in the RipCurl International surfing Gromsearch final where I placed 3rd. Later on in the year I traveled to France to compete in Rescue14 ( Surf lifesaving world champs). I placed 3rd overall in the Youth Board race, as well as collecting a Gold, 2 silvers, and another bronze. Not to mention I was on my last year of school...
This year I have had to battle with a back injury that really set back my participation in all the NZ surfing competitions as well as missing out on the training season for Surf club.
With a lot of Pilates and core strengthening and rest I decided to compete in Surf Lifesaving Nationals. I reclaimed my UN19 womens board title and made the final for the Open Womens, I also collected a bronze in the Board rescue with my cousin/teammate Abby and myself and my two team mates Abby and Meg reclaimed our UN19 Board relay title for the third year in a row.
This year I'm taking the year off to train for my sports and really focus on improving my surfing and board paddling so I am at the top level ready to compete on the world stage the following year.
I am also hoping to make the NZ worlds surfing team for 2015 and the SLS Resue challange team for 2015.
but for the moment my focus has been put all towards MEXICO!
MY MEXICO MISSION
At the moment I am focusing and training hard for the ISA World Stand Up Paddle and Paddleboarding Championships in Sayulita in Mexico this May. I am competing in the women’s 6k technical race which is on a 12ft prone paddleboard. All three of the possible International rep trips will be fully self funded, including this trip! I have not raced internationally in a long distance Prone Paddleboard race before and I am so excited to have this chance and compete against the best and race for the World Title!
BUDGET
I am looking to raise $4000 for this trip. I depart Auckland with the New Zealand team on the 7th of May and depart Mexico on the 21st.
Any support is much appreciated and the money I raise will be put into my travel costs to Mexico and accommodation while I'm over competing at the World Champs!!
