Getting Charlie home

On Wednesday the 5th of July our brother, a New Zealand citizen living and working in Australia went to Cambodia on holiday. On Thursday he had a bad fall and was taken to Calmette Hospital in Cambodias capital Phnom Penh. He was in ICU with a T11 fracture, dislocation and compressed spine.

Doctors started surgery the same day but had to stop due to low blood oxygen. He has no feeling from the waist down. Our sister flew over on Saturday to help care for him, support him and pay the bills which aren't added into the figures below.

Neuro Spinal Surgery was attempted again Tuesday 11th of July but they couldn't proceed and put him in a ward room. Someone put us onto a company called first assistance who help with emergency medical evacuations all over the world. They organize everything and liaise with doctors and hospitals. He was medivacd from cambodia to Bangkok hospital at the cost of $26,000. Surgery went ahead on Thursday 11th july at an cost of $36000 dollars. Surgery went well and he is recovering well. We have been told if he stayed a few more days in cambodia he would have died. Care in the hospital all up is arround $60,000. Latest update..Arrangements are being made today 19th July to fly him back to perth as it's cheeper than to Nz. Cost $31000. He will be on a stretcher and escorted by a nurse and doctor.

Unfortunately he didn't have travel insurance so we as a family are trying to support him.
