The restoration of the Monk Cottage of Makara. We are restoring this old building for the community
Wellington
This old cottage was built in about 1874, it fell into disrepair and was moved from its original site to a community area along side St Patrick's Church in the Makara Village.
The community is now restoring the building. So far we have replaced the main roof and the windows so it is weather tight.
The next phase it to replace the downstairs flooring so that it is safe to enter the building itself.
We are restoring the building so that our children and future generations can remember our pioneering ancestors and early community.
The Monk Cottage was built in about 1874 by George Monk and Ruth Robinson. It is now owned by the community & is being restored to provide a space for local memorabilia
Please help us replace the floor of this old building so we can house our community history in one place
