Please consider helping Turk (Turkleton) get back on all paws
Rotorua, Bay Of Plenty
On the 3rd of May 2023 we went out for one of our usual walks at the Scion Dog Park, Turk came down a hill that he has run hundreds of times and landed badly, in the pouring rain, with our then 15 month old in the pram. A kind stranger carried all 30kg of our wet dog to the road side to our waiting car and we rushed straight to the vet.
Initial x-rays showed there was no break so we went home with Turk on crate arrest. The weeks that followed included many painkillers, bandage changes, pressure sores, a leg splint and many many tears. Yet Turk had made no progress, his injury had only worsened. We were finally referred for surgery.
On the 12th of July, 8 weeks after the initial injury, Turk underwent a "Pancarpal Arthrodesis" which our surgeon has repeatedly referred to as one of the biggest orthopedic procedures a dog can have. Now we face a further 8-12 weeks worth of recovery. Following this recovery period we will also take our surgeons recommendation on rehabilitation activities.
Now for the part that the pet lovers will understand...
- Prior to surgery we spent over $2000 caring for Turk and trying to figure out what exactly was happening
- The procedure was $6500 + painkillers + follow up xrays + follow up bandage changes = The price you pay to help one of your beloved family members

Recovery Going Well 6 August 2023
Hi all! Thanks so much to those who have donated, it has really helped to ease some of the financial pressure we have been feeling. Turk had a routine bandage change last week, where he also had his stitches removed from his shoulder and leg. At this stage the surgeon is very happy with where Turk is at with his recovery and we are to carry on what we've been doing. Turk has been the best patient and is very co operative with going into and staying in his crate, he enjoys his 5 minute sniffaris outside and loves when we have visitors around! 3 weeks down, 9 to go!
