4am March 8th, 2017 - A record breaking rainfall sends a Tsunami of water & debris down the Coromandel's Rangihau valley.
Waikato
An old Kauri loggers dam, situated upstream near the famous Pinnacles DOC track on the Rangihau river, bursts and a huge flow of whole trees and debris heads down the river gorge gathering momentum. In it's path is the idyllic 17 acre farm of Ian Eggleton & Sally McKinnon.
It smashes over the stock banks and breaches, smashing through trees & native bush, flooding the land with silt, and leaving in it's wake massive damage & destruction to the pristine environment. Fences, hedges, trees, native bush, animal enclosures, farm buildings, a newly launched Eco-Camping site, and their beautiful old homestead are hit.
2 young campers narrowly escape with their lives.
They have lost their farm's income of grazing cattle stock, and the glamping business. The beautiful old Kauri homestead is still uninhabitable, and they are currently renting nearby while it is under repair.
If all this were not enough to deal with, a week after the devastation Ian underwent major surgery for Prostrate cancer. His recovery & rehabilitation has kept him from actively participating in the daunting amount of work required to start the clean up & rebuild.
Ian & Sally were insured for the home and it's contents, and the Eco-Camping site. But the cost of the extensive restoration of the farm and native bush will fall on them.
All donations will be greatly appreciated.

Ian & Sally are two of my closest friends, I have known Ian since I started work at Avalon TV centre in 1975. Relatively new to the Coromandel, and rural life, Ian & Sally took on the challenge to upgrade their farm and build a stock grazing and Eco-Camping business with passion & hard work. They were prepared to invest time & money to realise their dream, and were just starting to reap the rewards. I am truly devastated by the tragic upheaval to their lives, and sad for the destruction of their beautiful farm.
All money raised will go towards clearing the farm paddocks of silt, debris, downed native bush & trees, and rebuilding fences. Restoring water piping to troughs, rebuilding & planting gardens, and rejuvenating the soil so Ian & Sally can regain income from grazing. Heavy machinery is required for the clearing of the massive amount of debris before replacing trees to restore the native bush and eco-system that made this farm so special.
