Making my second chance count
Auckland
In 2019 an accident while working changed my life. I am lucky to be alive so I am living my best life now! A faulty truck tyre exploded leaving me with several spinal fractures, 2 broken arms, a broken wrist and resulting in me having a craniotomy replacing my forehead with a titanium plate. Having been self employed and providing for elders and my own family it devastated our lives as the injuries would forever impair my ability to carry out my skills. Covid hit and we had to sell assets to survive but we were blessed to have a chance to start over. I decided if I can't work, I can teach and pass on my skills. I am now in my final year of studying to be a technology teacher. As a student teacher I am a specialist trades teacher for metal engineering and I love it! I never thought I could teach until this happened and I am certain I found my calling. Being able to pass on skills that can help build a child's career or simply add value to their lives is what makes me wake up in the morning. Giving back what I know has been my greatest joy and I go to school everyday thinking of new ways and techniques which can help my kids in class love working with their hands and having a skill as much as I do. When I see them succeed I am filled with pride. As they say, "teaching is the only profession that creates all other professions." I am glad to be a part of this noble profession.
I have loans which I secured so I could pay for my studies so I would like to pay them off. For my practicums I spend 2 months without pay so it will also be used to food, bills and basics while I am on this 2 month unpaid part of my studies.
Thank you very much.
