An invitation to contribute to the cost of $8,000 required to creating the Glengarry Soldier Settlement Heritage Information Site.
Manawatu / Whanganui
A project is underway to create a small Heritage Information site on Armstrong Road, Dannevirke, to commemorate the locally and nationally significant story of the WWI Glengarry Soldier Settlement. The political lobby started by soldier settlers in Glengarry sparked a national swell of support in the early 1920s for the NZ Government of the day to undertake a much needed nation-wide review of this post-war farm settlement rehabilitation scheme. The outcome of this lobby-action enabled many of the 4,000 soldier settlers throughout NZ to establish sustainable small farms, and enrich the fabric of rural communities. Lest we forget.
The charity aims to promote the Phil Lamason WWII story and work collaboratively with local groups to help preserve and present other important local Dannevirke heritage stories.
Money will be spent on siteworks and creating display boards with key information. The Phil Lamason Heritage Centre Trust (Inc) is most appreciative of the donations of the land, work and services towards this heritage project.
