To help a NZ/refugee family return home for their 11-year old son's important cultural milestone.
Wellington
11-year old Ray and his family (Mum, Dad and little brother) are Karen refugees from Myanmar (Burma). His Mum Lah and Dad Yee grew up listening to the sound of guns and conflict as part of daily life. They had to flee their home twice when soldiers arrived to murder all people in their village and burn it down. They had to settle in a refugee camp where they lived for 28yrs.
The family were lucky to come to New Zealand as refugees 6 years ago and are proud to have become NZ citizens. When they first arrived, they could hardly speak English but now the two young boys are thriving at Waterloo primary school . The Mum and Dad work part-time at Naenae College as teacher-aides - Yee in the special needs unit and Lah helping new Karen refugee families learn English and settle into the Kiwi way of life. Rarely would you meet such friendly, giving people.
As part of their Karen Buddhist culture, it is important that Ray completes 1-week's training to become a novice monk. This is a very special part of a boy's upbringing and a big deal for the family.
They are such an honest, kind family who are so happy to have made a new home here in New Zealand. They arrived with nothing and still do not have much. Please help them to briefly return overseas and have their family surround them as they celebrate this important milestone in Ray's cultural journey.
I have known this lovely family since they first moved to NZ 6 years ago as refugees from Myanmar and became our neighbours. At first they could hardly speak English and now they are proud NZ citizens, and help other refugees with settling in to NZ. Both their boys attend our local primary school and are thriving.
The parents Lah and Yee, are also doing well, now that they are well settled into NZ and they aren't constantly surrounded by conflict and persecution. I can't begin to understand what it would be like to go to sleep to the sounds of gunfire and to grow up having to flee your burning village so that you weren't killed, let alone living in a refugee camp for 28 years!
I have put this page together to help raise some funds towards their trip back overseas for their eldest boy Ray's special training. They are such an honest, kind family who are so happy to have made a new home here in New Zealand. They deserve a chance to briefly return overseas and have their family surround them as they celebrate this important milestone in Ray's cultural journey.
The money will be for the cost of the family (2 adults, 2 children) to fly to Thailand for Ray's 1-week training, their transfer costs, travel fees and for food and expenses whilst there.
A successful trip - Thank you from Ray 9 July 2019
Thank You
So, as you all may know I went on my trip and became a novice monk for 5 days and I would love to say thank you so much for helping make that happen. You do not know how much it means to me as I had the time of my life there and I really enjoyed becoming a monk.
So a lot of you were wondering what some of the photos mean and so basically because before the Buddha was the Buddha he was a prince, and so you have to dress up like a prince and ride a horse through your family's villages during a three day festival. In the photo with the man carrying me, it was because I was not allowed to step foot on the ground so we had to get people to carry us.
The Monk training was really fun but I learned a lot about discipline and my mind felt more fresh. During the monk training every day we had to walk around the area to get the rice but we had to do it barefoot so my foot felt like it was dead but I had to keep going. I really enjoyed helping out around the temple and just relaxing.
Thanks All
Ray Moo
