Help Shaun to be able to have the basic necessity of been able to shower in his own home as Kainga Ora and disability support won't help.
Palmerston North, Manawatu-Wanganui
My son Shaun is a 21yr old with Autism, intellectual disability & PTSD from abuse in a organizations respite care house. Shaun moved into his very first Kainga Ora home in Nove 2024. We have been fighting with Kainga Ora and disability funding companies to get alterations done on his pathetically laid out bathroom. Shaun's Shower is fixed to the side wall of the bath and at a very low height, which means anytime he tries and has a shower he needs to bend right over and water goes all over the floor.
We have asked and fought with KO doe the last serval months to try and get this fixed and they say he could be waiting up to a year if not more. The disability funding is too busy to assess him, and an assessment could be a year and half away.
With his Autism he cannot stand the feeling of having a bath as part of his sensory issues, so he has to shower. Currently his 24 hr. support staff is having to take him to other houses just to have a basic shower and keep himself clean.
$3000 just to move the shower head and all the plumbing from side of bath to end of bath and Kainga Ora and Disability service expect him on a benefit or me and my wife on low income and 5 kids at home to cover this cost.
The funds will be spent on be able to move the shower head to the end of the bath like most showers are and raise it to a height he can use it.
Update 26 April 2025
As of this past week 26/04/25 I have had to buy flexi shower hose and attachments and materials to make the adjustments and build and install myself so goal has now changed just to get back cost it has cost me to install this into my son's state house even after my local MP got onto disability funders and KO with no luck and them passing the buck and blaming new govt changes to funding
