Hey!

I'm Josie, I'm 16 years old and in December of 2019, I am going to be taking part in a 10-day volunteer trip to Borneo with Schoolies Unearthed.

On this trip to Borneo, I will get to help out a jungle village outside of Kuching or Kota Kinabalu. In a group with 20 other high school graduates, we'll assist at local primary schools, renovating and building classrooms, kitchens, toilets and play areas. These schools are super important to the local community, as they help the children learn Malaysian and prepare for secondary school life.

As well as the volunteer work, I will get to explore what Borneo has to offer. A day trip to the TAR islands, the amazing wildlife including seeing orang-utans and learning about conservation efforts. I will also get to hit the bustling markets of Kota Kinabalu or Kuching for a spot of local shopping.

This is the trip of a lifetime and will cost a total of $4500NZD most of which I will be able to come up with on my own, and I have already paid some of the cost and the current amount still needed is just under $4000. The reason the goal is only set to $1000 and is ending in a month is that of an upcoming payment instalment. I applied for the trip a couple of days ago and the first payment of $1000 is due on December 1st. If you are able to help by donating or sharing that would be much appreciated, a little can go along way.

Schoolies unearthed is a program developed and run by Antipodeans who have 27 years of experience with amazing trips for high schools and universities. Unlike other Antipodeans trips: Schoolies unearthed was set up to help high school graduates interact directly with overseas communities and contribute meaningfully to their lives. Unlike many other volunteer programs: Antipodeans focus on being ethical, sustainable and align with the UN Goals for sustainable development.

Previous projects include: Renovating and building new school classrooms, Solar hot water and heating installation projects, building greenhouses for micro-financing schemes, constructing toilets and washing facilities to assist with health and hygiene issues, building kitchens and vegetable patches to assist with meals for students and assisting with wildlife conservation projects.

Thank you for reading this far, I would appreciate it if you could share this and consider helping me with this journey.

Use of funds

This $1000 is the first instalment of the $4500 cost. 20% is for research/preparation, 20% safety measures and 60% trip costs. A full breakdown of costs is on the Schoolies Unearthed website.
