  • Costs Update

      13 June 2016

While we are still assessing the lost equipment and getting quotes we don't have exact figures of costs but today we went through all the major losses and their known costs and our equipment losses have crept up to $163,000. This does not include a lot of the smaller equipment we had.

Press release - Willis Street Closure

    Wednesday 1 June 2016

    Dunedin Gymnastic Academy

    31 May 2016

    PRESS RELEASE

Dunedin Gymnastic Academy is urgently looking for new premises after having to cease programs at their Willis St gym due to test results showing asbestos present. Under the new Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 Asbestos Regulations, the Academy has had testing carried out of asbestos levels at their Willis St gym by accredited specialists Southern Insulation. The results are that there is no presence of asbestos in the air, however the results came back positive on rafters and window sills due to 80 year old roof showing signs of age.

President Louise Taylor advises “The Executive has taken legal advice, held discussions with the property owner and taken further advice from Southern Insulation. The advice is that the health risk is very low. However, due to our obligations under work safe, we have made the difficult decision to cease classes at Willis St until we have further advice and a plan of how to proceed. The property owner is investigating but warns it is likely it will not viable to have repairs made to the building to eliminate the risk from asbestos.”

“We have more than 150 gymnasts currently training for competitions out of this venue. Senior gymnasts train up to 16 hours per week. It is their passion and chosen sport and we are facing an uphill battle to find temporary and longer term training options. We are delighted that other Dunedin Clubs are offering time to share facilities where they can, but this is not a medium or long term solution.

“The Executive is working hard to find a replacement facility and we appeal to the community for a temporary or permanent option. The Club requires a space of at least 600m2 with a stud height of 6m. Please get in touch with Alison Derbyshire at healthsafety@dunedingymnastics.co.nz if you have a facility that might be suitable.

“We appreciate the support and understanding of our DGA community with this difficult decision making and contingency planning process.”

    Louise Taylor

    President

  • Dunedin Gymnastics Academy

      9 June 2016

Welcome to the Dunedin Gymnastic Academy (DGA). We are committed and passionate about children and movement and the long lasting benefits gym sports have on a person's life.

It is our mission to foster a positive and inclusive gymnastic community that promotes potential and success for all.

We have a fantastic team of qualified coaches delivering an array of programmes which all play a key role in the development of fundamental movement patterns including (spring, landing, rotation, balance, swing, static positions, locomotion and manipulation). Even the most difficult skills,(the ones that win Olympic medals) - are combinations of these basic movement patterns, and an infinite number of variations of the qualities of movement. If well developed early in life, these patterns will:

    enhance sport participation and enjoyment

contribute to a healthy, active lifestyle

provide basic physical and motor capabilities that we can draw on for a lifetime

allow those with the interest and ability to achieve success at any step of the competitive or recreational ladder of their chosen sport.

The programmes we offer assist in developing total body strength, flexibility, coordination, fitness, power, kinaesthetic awareness, and very importantly self-confidence.

Remember, gymnastics is about "how the body moves" and therefore is the Foundation Sport for all physical acitivity and sports.
