Help Dunedin Gymnastics Academy replace equipment lost to asbestos contamination and move into a new building.
Otago
Dunedin Gymnastics Academy Competition gymnasts have been struck a major blow right at the start of the 2016 competition season.
At the start of June the Willis Street Premises, which houses Womens Artistic Gymnastics, Regional Gymnastics and the Tiny Tots Classes, was forced to close due to asbestos contamination.
This has meant trying to find new premises, within our budget in a very short time frame, while timetabling the gymnasts to use other smaller gyms to train for the up and coming competitions.
BUT even more devastating is that over $120,000 worth of gymnastics equipment has had to be written of. This incident is not covered by insurance as it is not a one off incident but has built up over time, unbeknown to the DGA Executive.
Over the next couple of weeks a list of equipment we need to source and buy asap will be provided but for now any assistance to get the new space up and running will be gratefully accepted.
DGA are committed and passionate about children and movement and the long lasting benefits gym sports have on a person's life. It is our mission to foster a positive and inclusive gymnastic community that promotes potential and success for all.
We have a fantastic team of qualified coaches delivering an array of programmes which all play a key role in the development of fundamental movement patterns including (spring, landing, rotation, balance, swing, static positions, locomotion and manipulation). Even the most difficult skills, (the ones that win Olympic medals) are combinations of these basic movement patterns, and an infinite number of variations of the qualities of movement. If well-developed early in life, these patterns will:
· enhance sport participation and enjoyment
· contribute to a healthy, active lifestyle
· provide basic physical and motor capabilities that we can draw on for a lifetime
· allow those with the interest and ability to achieve success at any step of the competitive or recreational ladder of their chosen sport.
The programmes we offer assist in developing total body strength, flexibility, coordination, fitness, power, kinaesthetic awareness, and very importantly self-confidence.
Remember, gymnastics is about "how the body moves" and therefore is the Foundation Sport for all physical activity and sports. Do you remember doing gymnastics at school? This option is no longer available at school and it is coming across in the health and wellbeing of today’s children.
DGA currently has over 600 registered members and 9000 casual users each year - it is the largest gymnastics club in Otago and Southland. Programmes range from tiny tots through to international competitors. The club is one of only a few in the country to offer a full range of gymnastics programmes - tiny tots, kiwi gym, sports gym, regional boys and girls competition, artistic boys and girls competition, aerobics, rhythmic, trampolining and parkour.
Gymnastics is about "how the body moves" and therefore is the Foundation Sport for all physical acitivity and sports.
Gymnastics enhances sport participation and enjoyment, contributes to a healthy active lifestyle, provides the basic physical and motor capabilities that we draw on for a lifetime and allows people to achieve success at any step of their chosen sport.
