Kia ora,
Leon Hudson is an 18-year-old New Zealander of Ngāti Konohi, Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti, Ngāti Kahungunu and Ngā Puhi descent.
Born with mild cerebral palsy (Spastic Diplegia), Leon has faced significant challenges throughout his life, but his condition has never defined what he is capable of achieving. Inspired by his papa and tipuna who served in the Armed Forces, Leon dreamed of joining the Royal New Zealand Navy to serve his country. Unfortunately, his application was declined due to his condition.
Although devastating, Leon has chosen to pivot with purpose. He is currently completing his Level 4 Hauora certificate to gain entry into university, where he plans to study a Bachelor of Health Science in Paramedicine. Through this pathway, Leon hopes to continue his commitment to serving his community and making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
Outside of study, Leon has found strength, identity and belonging through waka ama. In February 2025, he attended a beginners course and went on to compete in the adaptive category at the Waka Ama Sprint Nationals 2026, earning 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. His outstanding results secured selection to represent New Zealand at the upcoming Waka Ama World Sprint Championships in Singapore this August.
This is an incredible honour and opportunity, but competing internationally comes with significant costs, including travel, accommodation, equipment and training.
A little goes a long way, all the way to Singapore ;) Arohanui x
