Helena Goldie Hospital (in Munda, Solomon Islands) has many real needs, both current and ongoing.
Nationwide
Vision: Our community will receive high quality health care services which meets Ministry
of Health guidelines and which are provided by trained and experienced staff who are
supported by sound management, good administrative systems and adequate, well-maintained
infrastructure.
Helena Goldie Hospital was established in 1903, has always been a demonstration of the generous hearts of people, both local and overseas. If it wasn't for the generous and faithful support of caring people, HGH would have never made it to this day. With such strong and committed support over the years, and in agreement with the Western Provincial Health Services, HGH looks after 15 clinics within Zone 3 of Western Province, the area comprising of North New Georgia, Vona Vona Lagoon, Roviana Lagoon and Rendova Islands. The estimated population within the
area is over 26,000.
HGH recently has qualified for Baby Friendly Hospital status, having passed the assessment by a team comprising of WHO/UNICEF and Ministry of Health officials.
There are over 60 employees in HGH including nurses, paramedics and supporting staff.
HGH also run a College of Nursing (HGCON), with 16 intakes every year.
Medical students on electives are taken in throughout the year. Most of the students come from UK. The rest are from Australia and New Zealand.
Current situation and needs:
Helena Goldie Hospital now has a couple of doctors from Switzerland and one local doctor.
The challenges the hospital has are:
* Nursing staff – we are short of qualified Registered Nurses and we do not have the money to recruit new ones.
* Accommodation – Even if we can recruit nurses, we do not have accommodation for them.
* Transport – We do not have a good vehicle for the hospital. Although we have two good sea ambulances provided for by NZ donors.
* Direct employed staff receive a very low salary.
* Government grant is inconsistent in coming and it is not enough to meet the recurrent budget.
* Traditional donor partners have stopped.
* No funding for infrastructure developments.
Helena Goldie Hospital is in the 'town' where Katherine's life began (prenatal). The hospital facilities haven't really improved since a time before she existed. Needs are great. We're hoping to do some fundraising on the hospitals behalf (through existing contacts in NZ).
Katherine's family has had connections with this part of the Solomon Island's for a number of decades, prior to her Dad moving there in the mid '70's and Mum in early 1980, working in the hospital until they returned to New Zealand in early 1982 (Katherine was born at Middlemore in April 1982). Links have been maintained over the decades, with involvement in the ex-pat community in New Zealand. Katherine visited the Solomon Island's, including Munda in mid 2016, and witnessed the infrastructure (or lack thereof) herself.
It has been suggested that funds raised would help pay the salary of the chief nurse at the hospital.
