Help 10 yars-old Yaroslav to make his way to New Zealand to his sister Oleksandra and overcome the trauma of war and losing his parents
Auckland
Oleksandra is the only person in the entire world who is close to her brother and who can adopt him.
I encourage everyone to read the article in The Informer Coromandel (21 of October 2025) which explains their story in more details.
Oleksandra needs financial support for an immigration adviser and lawyer. This is essential to legally process Yaroslav's adoption and allow him to settle here as part of her family.
When the war in Ukraine began in 2022, Yaroslav's hometown was badly bombed. This forced him, his mother Svitlana, and his father Oleg,to flee to Ireland as war refugees. His sister, Oleksandra, has been a New Zealand resident since 2018 and lives here with her own family.
Tragically, Svitlana, their mother, passed away in Ireland in 2023. She had cancer and died in pain and suffering before little Yaroslav's eyes.
This year, a new challenge hit the family. Their father, Oleg, was diagnosed with a very similar cancer that took his wife's life. (I want to clarify an error in the newspaper article: he is alive, but in hospital with stage 4 cancer). He cannot care for Yaroslav.
Ireland's Child and Family Agency, supports the plan for Oleksandra to travel to Ireland and adopt Yaroslav with her father's permission.
We also want to ensure Yaroslav has support when he arrives. Helping a traumatised kid settle involves costs for his needs. We believe in the power of community koha to make this miracle happen and help him recover.
We are deeply grateful for every act of koha.

Closing the Fundraiser 4 March 2026
The family reunification process has now begun. I do not yet know how long it may take, but I will continue to share updates here for everyone who cares about this situation.
The funds that were raised — with Svetlana’s help in sharing my brother Yaroslav’s story — are being kept in a separate account and will be used for his flight once the legal matters are resolved.
I will provide a full update and attach screenshots when the funds are used.
If anyone has questions regarding my brother’s situation, please feel free to contact me directly on Facebook: Aleksandra Shevchenko. I will respond as I am able, particularly if it concerns Yaroslav.
