Helping Tommy age 3 on his cancer journey
Auckland
Tommy was diagnosed a few days after his second birthday in May 2023, with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL)– a cancer of the white blood cells, which normally fight off infections.
Tommy was put on a treatment straight away. The past year and a half has been an “emotional roller coaster”, with Tommy making it through the intensive phase of his chemotherapy only to be diagnosed with a rare fungal lung infection called pulmonary mucormycosis.
The only known treatment he was allergic to and the survival rates were worse than his cancer.
I was told the survival rate for the infection was between 14% and 46%, after 7 weeks in hospital, Tommy continued showing his resilience as he overcame it in July this year.
He is now in the maintenance phase of his chemotherapy, which means daily treatment from home for the next year and a half.
Tommy is the strongest kid I know, he’s brave and kind, loving and funny! His laugh is contagious, so is his smile. Tommy is very clever, speaks well, knows all his ABCS ,loves to learn and paint and draw and play.
He deserves to be able to live life like any other 3 and a half year old. Exploring, socialising, learning, creating, loving, being loved and enjoying every day with each new adventure it brings.
Tommy is my amazing son.
Tommy also has medical costs that are not funded and have been unexpected, these include some of his medications, trips to the emergency department and appointments, parking, paying for hospital food on admissions as well as things for Tommy.
