HELP ABANDONED ANIMALS IN UKRAINE –

  • CHRISTMAS FOR THE ANIMALS

      24 December 2022

It's not a very merry Christmas in Ukraine at the moment. The power is often out, so they're cold. And the bombing has increased, so they're scared. But your donations have helped our rescue partners provide them with veterinary treatment and food, and transport the lucky ones who've found a forever home in Poland or nearby countries. Thank you for helping them from afar.

  • WITH LOVE FROM NZ – FORREST’S STORY

      13 November 2022

Thanks to everyone who has donated, we’ve been able to help a very large number of animals that were abandoned or injured in the horrific war. Forrest is just one of many animals we’ve rescued, but I’ll share his story because it’s a good example of what you’ve helped us accomplish. Forrest’s rear feet were literally gone, probably from a landmine or bomb. We covered evacuation expenses from the war zone, temporary vet care, food & housing within Ukraine, then transport to Poland (including required vaccinations, travel passport, etc). We paid for his surgery and extended recovery in the vet hospital. Once his stumps healed sufficiently, he went to a shelter that specialises in disabled animals, where we cover all his needs. Forrest is now trialling orthotics, and permanent prosthetics will be made. He has gone from a terrified dog in constant pain, to a confident loving boy who is enjoying life. We will continue to support him on his healing journey, and hopefully one day into a happy home with a loving family. And yes, he was named from Forrest Gump: “Run, Forrest, run!!”

  • UKRAINE RESCUES CONTINUE –

      15 June 2022

The two rescue groups we are working closely with in Ukraine are simply amazing. Even after their rescue van was bombed, they're eager to get back to the war areas to feed, treat, and evacuate as many abandoned animals as they can. Absolutely determined and fearless! They do all the hard work in horrific conditions, and we support them by buying animal food, medical supplies, veterinary treatment, helping to purchase a replacement rescue van, etc. We also support a shelter in Lutsk that takes these animals, feeds and treats them, and arranges for them to cross the border to carefully vetted forever homes. Your donations literally make all the difference to what they can accomplish, so we are beyond grateful for your contributions. Thank you.

  • UPDATE: ANIMALS ON THE MOVE

      24 May 2022

I received this news from Veronika, who runs the animal shelter in Lutsk, Ukraine. I thought you would enjoy some good news, thanks to those who contributed:

"Hi Shawn & Animal Sanctuary Friends! I write to you with gratitude to share the joy! Yesterday 8 of the 21 animals evacuated from Mykolaiv who were brought to us - went to live in Poland. Thanks to your donations, I managed to do everything necessary for such transportation, includes veterinary passports and rabies vaccinations. Without them it is impossible to transport these unfortunate animals across the border to new homes and new lives. Your funds also covered other expenses related to this transportation. With money left from your donation we continue to care for and treat remaining animals. These includes an old cat with virus, a young dog with parvovirus, an old dog with heartworms, 4 other animals with less problems, and the 6 rest. I am sincerely grateful to you all for your support and help! Thank you for your humanity."

  • RESCUE FROM MYKOLAIV (5 May)

      24 May 2022

    FROM NZ WITH LOVE:

Thanks to the additional funds you donated, we were able to pay for a second rescue within Ukraine. Abandoned cats and dogs were evacuated from war-torn Mykolaiv and transported almost 1000km to the animal rescue shelter we’ve partnered. With constant shelling in Mykolaiv, you can imagine that the animals were highly stressed. We have sponsored 7 dogs and 14 cats. It was a very difficult trip, and we’re sooo grateful to the brave driver. Upon arrival at the shelter, the animals were fed with food supplied by you, the friends of The Animal Sanctuary. They’re also receiving veterinary care with Your funds, to prepare them for the next leg of their journey across the border to Poland. Thank you for your support in the middle of their hell.

  • UKRAINE TRIP #1

      9 May 2022

    FROM NZ WITH LOVE:

This is just one of the many photos and stories we’ve received from the rescue trip to Ukraine which we sponsored. This photo shows Ukrainian people, forced to flee their homes due to the devastation of war, who found shelter at the centre we’re helping near Lutsk. These people all escaped carrying their dog or a cat - they did not leave their pets to die. The food for the animals was purchased by friends of The Animal Sanctuary, and the food for the people was purchased by a few kind NZ vegans. Thank you so much for your support.
