Help Australian volunteer firefighters!

  • Thank you from Australia

This is what we published in today's news on The Central App:

The Central App has received the sincere thanks on behalf of hundreds of donors from the various Australian states’ volunteer firefighting organisations which received donations through the bushfire crisis crowdfunding page which ran earlier this year.

The Central App’s Marielle Craighead began the Givealittle page at the start of January with the hopes of raising whatever she could to help volunteer organisations in the Australian states of New South Wales (NSW), Victoria (Vic) and Queensland (Qld).

In four weeks, 817 donors had donated the grand sum of NZ$52,449, with people as young as eight and some well into old age.

Spark took their cut through the Givealittle crowdfunding page, which brought the total donation down to NZ$51,000, and that total was equally shared between the three volunteer firefighting services of each state, equating to NZ$17,000 each.

Marielle said the story of how she started the page was a moment of shock.

“I set up the Givealittle page after waking to a golden haze on New Year's Day, which progressed to a smoke filled day,” she said. “Smoke from bushfires over 2,000km away, which we could not only see, but smell! The fires had been burning quite a while already, of course, but this was the final "kick up the butt" I needed.”

The Central App’s Marielle Craighead started the crowdfunding page as a way to help out during the Bushfire Crisis, and the page quickly received hundreds of donations from around the world. Image courtesy Pixabay.

Marielle said she was touched by the messages which poured in with the donations and explained all donors’ messages have been forwarded to the Australian rural fire authorities so they can share them with their teams.

“From the person who said they were a pensioner and couldn't afford much, but still donated $20, to the young eight-year-old who had sold her baking and raised over $400, to the English Language School in Auckland who set a target of $2,000 but raised a whopping $2,520, to the $1 donations - every dollar counted,” she said.

“Some came from right here, some from Ohio, USA and Germany – and Australia. Some came via our co-fundraisers, who had decided to raise funds in their groups and clubs and donate to our cause.

“The largest of those was the Wanaka Aussie Aid page, which raised $6,378 through their Givealittle page - this on top of what they raised at the concert. All reduced me to tears of gratitude. We were making a difference. A big difference!”

Some local retail businesses even had coin donation tins at their counters throughout the fundraising period.

The New South Wales Rural Fire Service & Brigades (NSW RFS) greatly accepted the donation.

“This donation is accepted with much gratitude and you can be assured that it will be utilised to support our volunteer rural firefighters and members, whose energy and commitment contribute to protecting and supporting NSW communities,” the letter, signed by the NSW RFS chief financial officer said.

“Please convey our sincere thanks to the 800 people an companies for their kind and generous donation made to The Trust.”

The Victorian Country Fire Authority & Brigades (CFA) wished to convey their sincere thanks.

“On behalf of the Country Fire Authority, we sincerely thank you for your support of our organisation during this challenging fire season,” the letter said.

“Our volunteers are from the community, to serve the community, and donations from the public greatly assist us in our mission to protect lives and property.

“CFA appreciated your acknowledgement of the commitment and dedication of Victoria's volunteer firefighting force.”

Marielle, who forwarded some of the kind words sent by donors to the firefighters, said the Queensland Rural Fire Service is yet to send their letter of thanks but has communicated the have received their donation.

“I would like to thank Westpac Alexandra who have generously waived their transfer fees,” she said.

“Above all - thank you to everyone. Again, cliché - but the words "thank you" seem so insignificant to acknowledge what you have all done! I know the volunteers who have worked in some terrifying conditions, fighting fires for days without a break will be very grateful.”

  • Thank you all!

      3 February 2020

Thank you all for your wonderful donations.

The page has now closed, and while we await the transfer of funds from Givealittle to our account, we are busy sending your messages of support to the three rural volunteer fire authorities - and still getting donations locally, here in Central Otago, from a couple of businesses who have been collecting on behalf.

When we receive confirmation from the fire authorities we will publish these on this page, so you can see the money has gone to the right place!

    Thank you again!

    Warmest regards

    Marielle

  • Today is THE LAST DAY you can donate via givealittle.

      31 January 2020

$51,998 has been raised so far, which is just amazing.

The fires may not be being talked about on mainstream media anymore, but they are still raging, with a large fire currently bearing down on Canberra.

A new deployment of NZ firefighters left yesterday, including Tony Smith, from Clyde, who has again left his business, Junction Auto Services, in the capable hands of his team. Tony also served a tour fighting the fires back in December.

We will not be extending this givealittle page - so please donate today!

  • WE HAVE EXCEEDED $50,000!!!

      29 January 2020

We've just had a donation of $2,295 - plus $225 as a top up, offsetting the 5% the Spark Foundation take - from the EF Auckland language school.

Here's what they had to say:

Last week my class organised and ran a fundraising event to help the volunteer firefighters in Aus. They set a goal of $2000 but surpassed it. What an effort.👍👍 We wanted to give it to you guys to take care of it and get it into the right hands. Bonus is ...we're excited to help you pass your goal🤗🤗

I think they ROCK - and so does everyone who has donated!

And, we heard back from the Spark Foundation today, about our request asking them to reduce the percentage they take. Here's their answer (I hope this puts a few people's negative thoughts about the money taken from any donations to rest):

That is excellent news that your banks are going to waive the fees; we are aware that several banks did this for transfers from NZ to Aus, and hopefully they keep this going for longer than the the fires appear in the news; which seems to be less and less as you have mentioned.

Givealittle is a not-for-profit online platform that helps New Zealanders raise funds and donate to the causes they care about. In order to provide this service we have 3rd party costs we can’t avoid like Payment processor fees, Bank fees, Web hosting fees, and GST. All of those costs are paid by us to 3rd parties, and all of them are charged to us as a percentage of the volume through the site. This means that there is no ceiling on those costs. The more that is donated, the more we have to pay our suppliers.

To be fair to our suppliers, they already charge us charity / not-for-profit rates, so our costs are as low as they can be.

We also have a small team behind the scenes who manage our helpdesk, and website operation. The 5% fee ensures Givealittle can exist as a service to New Zealanders. Unfortunately we’re not at a point financially where we can offset or reduce the 5% service fee for any pages. Hopefully you can see that we're balancing our primary goal of facilitating generosity, with a view to making sure that we can ourselves stay afloat; and that I and the team here are passionate and committed to doing so.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this, and I please know that our team, the donors and NZ appreciate the work that your team and others are putting in to support Australia during this time.

  • Reality check: more smoke!

      28 January 2020

As a smoky hazy descends, once again, over Central Otago it provides a reality check. There is no mention of the still burning fires in mainstream media anymore. There is new news taking the place of the "old" news of the Australian bushfires.

I'm pretty sure it isn't "old" news in Australia though - nor in the lives of the volunteer firefighters, or their families. The longer these fires rage, the greater their need will be.

We are so tantalisingly close to the $50K. I have approached the Spark Foundation - who run this givealittle website - to see if they might consider reducing the percentage they take to allow us to donate as much as possible of the money we have raised. You can help with this too - by selecting the "top up" option when you donate. This offsets the money the Spark Foundation takes, thereby ensuring all your money goes to the cause - not givealittle!

The fires are still burning - can we keep our donation fire going? Please, if you haven't already done so, share this page with your friends. The more money we raise, the big the difference we can make in the lives of those who have been fighting since October last year!

To all who have already donated - including the large $2,000 one which came in last night: THANK YOU!!!

    Warmest regards,

    Marielle Craighead

  • Westpac waive their fees!

      27 January 2020

Great news - The Central App's bank, Westpac Alexandra, have agreed to waive the transfer fees to the nominated accounts of the Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales rural volunteer brigades - saving us $90 in fees.

    Thank you Westpac!

      21 January 2020

  • "The door handles had all melted"

      17 January 2020

If you want to get an idea of what it's like fighting fires in Australia, our reporter, Rowan Schindler, talked to two Central Otago firies who recently came back. Click on this link (it only works on smartphones though!) to read the story: https://thecentralapp.app.link/dWD6NGYLi3

The Australian volunteers have been fighting these fires for months - this is why we are raising funds. And you all rock - over $37,000 raised, and much more yet to come from various fundraising efforts!

My family have been firefighters in New Zealand and and it is in their memory that I have donated money to the Australian firefighters to help them in their fight to control these disastrous fires. Stay strong.

I am sharing your appeal with everyone I can

Thank you! Really appreciate you sharing this - every bit makes a difference!

  • For those who wish ....

      13 January 2020

I am seeing so many messages come in with donations saying "it's all I've got", or "I wish I could give more".

I want you to know - and I am sure the guys and girls on the front line, still fighting to try and stop these horrendous fires which have cost so many lives, will agree - every dollar is hugely appreciated and every dollar means so much.

Some people are in a position to donate more, and some people not so much. It doesn't matter - you are helping, each and every one of you.

As I keep saying, if every person in NZ donated just $1, we'd raise well over $4 million.

You may have only give a little - but little is huge!!

  • One donation...

      11 January 2020

.... is all it takes to make a difference. I have had many people tell me being able to donate to this givealittle page has made them feel less helpless about what's happening in Australia. We can't go and physically help - but we are helping. Whether you donate $1, or as Brennan Wines did $2,500 (WOW!) - we are making a difference! Thank you all.

  • Everyone - you ROCK!!

      9 January 2020

Apologies for no update yesterday - got a bit busy! We have now collectively raised over $22,000. AMAZING. Thank you to all the co-fundraisers - you are helping increase our total and every dollar counts. Thank you also to our Australian neighbours who are also contributing. In fact, there's people from all over the world now helping - it is just so cool!

I have passed all the messages you have been leaving with your donations to the Rural Fire teams in News South Wales, Queensland and Victoria. They are very grateful for the support - so keep them coming!

  • $17,000 and climbing!

      7 January 2020

Oh WOW. We have just hit the $17,000. What an amazing achievement.

We are at this total thanks to people like the young 12 year old who did work for his grandma to earn $25 which he then donated to this cause. Or the people who message saying "sorry, I can't afford more" or "sorry, it's not much". You know what?

    EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS!!

And yes - we've had some big donations. And yes -we are very, very grateful for those. But - every dollar counts. As I keep saying - if everyone in NZ donated just $1 - we'd raise over $4 million!

So thank you for your $1 donation. Thank you for your $1,000 donation. Thank you to individuals. Thank you to businesses. Thank you to Kiwis, Aussies, Canadians, Cypriots, Americans - yes, we have had donations from all over.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

  • $10k? Make that $12k!!

      6 January 2020

No sooner had I posted a "We've hit $10k" message when, a very short time later I see it's actually over $12k!! WOW WOW WOW!! Donations - yours! - are coming in from all over NZ and even across the world.

Lots of those donations also have messages of support, love and encouragement for the hard-working volunteers who continue to struggle to save lives, property and animals. We will be sending those messages to the volunteers as well as your money! Aroha NZ. Kia kaha Australia.

  • Thank you!

      5 January 2020

We've just ticked over $7,000 and the donations are now coming in thick and fast.

Thing is - I go back to work tomorrow, so am no longer going to be able to personally thank everyone, so I thought I should let all those I haven't thanked yet, and all future donors, know you're donations - large or small - are hugely appreciated and will be even more appreciated by the people who your donations will help - the volunteer firefighters of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

These guys and girls are giving their all to fight these fires and we will make sure (I will download the database this givealittle page creates which contains your messages) to pass your messages on to the volunteers. They will know we care through our donations - and messages.

Thank you - it is so incredibly heart-warming to know so many people are caring and generous. You guys all ROCK!!!

    Marielle

  • We are going to make a difference!

      4 January 2020

I'm sort of at a loss as to what to say - we're at such an amazing amount already - and we've only been going a couple of days! You have all been extremely generous.

As the fires in Australia worsen, the need for support for the volunteers at the rural fire brigades is only going to grow. It;s hard feeling helpless, and not being able to do anything - but we are. So good on you all!

Please keep sharing this page so we can keep growing the fund! Thank you!

  • WOW

      3 January 2020

Thanks to all the donors so far, we have raised over $800 in the first day - and this is one of the trending causes.

So please - share the link on your social media pages, via emails to friends - the more we raise, the more help we can send to our Aussie volunteer firefighting neighbours.
