We’re raising funds so Brody can appeal ACC’s decision and get surgery to walk properly, work again, and care for his family.
Fairlie, Canterbury
Meet Brody Burkhart — a great husband, Dad of four, and a hard-working Kiwi who has spent the past ten months battling severe back pain caused by two displaced spinal discs, one of which is ruptured and pressing on his sciatic nerve. Some days he can’t walk without a stick. Other days, he can’t walk at all.
Brody was a carpenter, but now even sitting for more than 20 minutes is unbearable. He still tries to chop wood and work on small home projects when he can — but the reality is that he can’t return to work without surgery.
Brody and Christa homeschool their four young children — Theo, Maggie, Arthur, and Henry — and are doing everything they can to hold things together. But now they’ve hit a wall.
The Situation:
1. ACC has declined funding for surgery, blaming an old injury from decades ago.
2. A specialist advocate believes this decision was made using incorrect procedures.
3.The appeal process costs $1200 in legal fees, and the surgeon’s reapplication fee is $3000 — which ACC will not cover.
These guys simply don’t have the money to move forward.
How You Can Help:
If they can raise $4000, they can proceed with the appeal, which could lead to surgery and recovery. If not, Brody faces an 18-month public health wait, unable to work, and dependent on a sickness benefit.
If you're not in a position to give financially, they would deeply value your prayers.
Thank you so much for your support — whether it’s through giving, sharing this page, or praying for this beautiful family.
I am Christa's mum and Brody's (favourite) Mother-in-law.
The money will cover legal and medical costs to appeal ACC’s decision to decline Brody’s back surgery. $1200 will go to a specialist advocate, and $3000 will pay the surgeon to resubmit the application. Anything extra will support the family’s needs.
