Help Community Compost scale their amazing operation in Nelson

Nelson

You may know of our tenacious journey to reduce emissions created from food waste in landfills, & our passion for regenerating our soils.

Now in our 4th year of collecting & processing kitchen waste in Nelson, we’ve diverted & upcycled 300+ tonnes of food scraps from landfill into quality, living compost. We have a growing customer base of over 120 ongoing collection contracts & we’ve built a strong & diverse community around our weekly educational initiative “Compost Club”.

Scaling up this operation is both essential & an enormous challenge. We built our first automated composting machine prototype “bEartha” to run Nelson City Council’s food waste collection trial in 2020. This was so successful that the MfE & NCC offered us grants to further develop our design. 2 years later, bEartha2 is finally complete.

With the perfect operation site secured in Nelson CBD, we’re ready to build Nelson’s first automated composting facility. While bEartha takes care of the bulk of the composting process, we need funds to build the supporting infrastructure needed to run the operation.

The completion of this facility will see us increase our intake capacity by 3 tonnes per week, create 6 part time jobs & a strong foundation for us to continue expanding from.

With your support we will be able to build our first facility without creating a large amount of debt.

Update #2 bEartha has arrived!  12 September 2022

Last week, our new bEartha machine was successfully delivered to site. With the auger, shredder and bEartha unit now in place, we are one step closer to hugely increasing our capacity, transforming even more food waste into beautiful, earth replenishing soil.

On the fundraising front, we’re now half way through our givealittle campaign but sadly have only raised around 17% of our goal. We’re optimistic that things will pick up speed as we promote the campaign through additional media channels in the coming days, but we’re also having to look at cutting all but essential costs.

This week we’re going to shift focus to getting the enclosed processing area installed. The marquee we purchased for this FINALLY arrived in the country last week, and we will be hosting a working bee this Friday to get it set up.

We now have 14 days to raise the remaining $35k. If you haven’t already, please help this campaign go further by liking, commenting and sharing it among your networks.
