Cecilia will be racing against some of the Worlds best at Western States Endurance Run in America on 29th June 2019, over 100 miles.
Waikato
Western States Endurance Run is one of the Ultimate Endurance tests in the world. It is the world's oldest 100 mile trail race, starting in Squaw Valley, California and ending 100.2 miles later in Auburn.
Last year Cecilia completed her first 'Miler', and against an international field she managed an amazing 5th place in 19:42.
After a days recovery, Cecilia was already determined to come back to Western States and go faster. As a top 10 finisher, Cecilia has an automatic entry into this year's race on 29-30 June 2019.
To prepare better for this years race, Cecilia has been forced to give up her University lecturing job to focus on her running and recovery. A normal week would include around 160km of running, plus strength sessions, stretching, rolling and occasional massages.
Preparing for this race puts a huge strain on Cecilia's time, body and cash reserves.
In late August, Cecilia is also competing in the UTMB Mont-Blanc (Chamonix, France). A 170km Mountain Race in high altitude with difficult weather conditions against the worlds best.
I met Cecilia just over 3 years ago when she first moved to Hamilton, and started running with her as we had both joined Hamilton City Hawks. I quickly figured out that Cecilia was a way better runner than me, and got thrashed in numerous runs including the Kepler Challenge and Double Rainbow. With my wife Fiona, we have been enjoying watching Cecilia do so well in Ultra events and have been trying to help her with international events.
Funds will be used to help with Flights, entry fees, accommodation for training before races, running gear and nutrition for races. The cost to train full time and compete overseas is huge. Any surplus would go towards UTMB costs.

Behind the scene: yesterday I finished my second western states. Probably the hardest thing i have ever done. 4/5 weeks ago I injureed my foot. I couldn't even walk and I though it was a stress fracture. Two weeks after I got diagnosed with an inflamed ganglion cycst hitting on nerve and tendine. Since the pain had subsided I started running a bit and decided to tow the line of western and do the best I could give the situation. The first 60/70km were great then I guess the cyst got inflamed again and the pain started. I run in pan for 15 hours. I don't think I have ever experienced so much pain for that long. I though i had been in the pain cave but I now realise I had only looked through the window. I admit I went in some dark places and I even started hoping that a rattle snake would bite me or a bear attack just so that I didnt have to hurt anymore. But thanks to my amazing pacers Mike trueblood and Eric Spencer and my awesome crew @fionabarnett @kevin.knowles8 @alexandra_tooker @michaeltooker @oliviatooker I managed to reach the finish line. I didn't know I could push through like this but now I know. Its not a glamorous result nor the one I was hoping for but I am still proud of it.
Ross - Cecilia still finished in 12th and an amazing time!
Grazie mille :)
