The money raised will be used to fund Debbies unfunded Cancer medication
Blenheim, Marlborough
In 2017 at the age of 35, Debbie was first diagnosed with Melanoma after having a mole and then some lymph nodes removed.
Fast forward to 2024 and Debbie unfortunately hit stage 4 which meant she finally qualified for Immunotherapy. Debbie did the Immunotherapy for only 10 months before her body started rejecting it and the lifeline it offered had to be taken away. She has now been told they are not doing any tumor removal or radiation treatments at this stage and her next option is unfunded medications, these are called BRAF/MEK inhibitors. Debbie is still waiting for her medical team to determine which ones are going to benefit her best. Hopefully she will know very soon.
This comes at a cost of $2k a week which is an unachievable amount of money for most.
They have eaten into their Kiwisaver, mortgage and savings over the past 7 years of surgeries and treatments as she's had to travel for all of them as Debbie explained to me "Getting sick is not cheap!" she is still working but it would be nice for Debbie to start reducing some working hours and start focusing on herself and her family.
Any funds raised will be used to pay for her medication, assisting with living expenses and if we can raise enough, we will be attacking her bucket list!
New Zealand and Australia have the highest rate in the world of Melanoma and if Debbie happened to live in Australia with this type of cancer, we wouldn't have to be fundraising as it's a funded medication there.
Debbie is my best friend of over 30 years
Cancer medication BRAF/MEK inhibitors (Encorafinib and Binimetinib) that is not funded by the NZ Government
