Cancer has stolen DJ’s childhood from him. Let’s all fight to give DJ the best chance of a healthy future.
Auckland
This is our brave little warrior DJ. DJ is an energetic, happy boy who has an inquisitive mind and loves to know how things work. He loves school, his family and friends. He loves fishing and lego.
DJ was diagnosed with leukaemia in October 2016 at only 8 years old.
He was immediately admitted to hospital and his life consisted of chemotherapy, blood and platelet transfusions, bone marrow biopsies and numerous other invasive and scary procedures. DJ spent months and months on end in Starship yet not once did he complain.
DJ was incredibly strong and got through the worst of it and was on maintenance chemo with one and a half years to go. In July 2018, the family received the devastating news that DJ had relapsed and the cancer had come back. DJ then had to start his cancer treatment right at the beginning again, this time with more intense chemotherapy and radiation. He had to re-live the horrific journey he had just been through.
Fast forward to today. DJ was only 6 days off finishing his cancer treatment and preparing to go back to school when he was delivered yet another devastating blow. The cancer is back.
Now aged 12, DJ is back in Starship and has been having intense chemotherapy to kill all the cancer cells in his body and spine in order to have a bone marrow transplant.
It hasn’t worked.
DJ and his family now face the unknown while they wait for his doctors in New Zealand to contact specialists overseas and try and figure out a plan moving forward. This could involve DJ going overseas for treatment which would come at a huge cost.
On top of this looming financial cost, there is also the cost of providing for a family. The money raised on this page will go towards groceries, petrol, bills, entertainment for DJ and ultimately be used for whatever lies ahead.
DJ's mother Megan is nothing short of incredible. She has raised her 10 children to be kind, caring and respectful. Megan is always putting others first, volunteering herself for different things in the community and never asks for anything in return. She currently has her 5 youngest children at home while she is with DJ in hospital. The older children help the younger ones. Two of DJ's siblings have Type 1 Diabetes which means they need to be injected with insulin every time they eat. Things have been made even harder with Covid, with only one person at a time allowed to be with DJ in hospital. At times DJ’s sister takes over a shift at the hospital, so Megan can come home briefly to spend time with the other children.

I have known DJ since he began his cancer journey. DJ is now family.
The money raised on this page will go towards groceries, petrol, bills, entertainment for DJ and ultimately be used for whatever lies ahead. Whether that involves treatment overseas is yet to be determined.
Going to transplant 12 October 2020
Kia Ora all you wonderful people. Just an update on DJ.
A few weeks ago DJ had a massive prolonged seizure on the immunotherapy drug he was on. As a result of this, he is no longer able to have the drug.
We have had to fast track his transplant. Tomorrow we are moving into the transplant unit where we will stay until he is okay. He will start radiation on Wednesday. His brother is going to be his donor which is only a half match. Actual transplant date is 27 October.
Once again, our whanau would like to thank you all for the ongoing support and love.
Megan
