Enable Ngā Manu Nature Reserve to support young kiwi with a stimulating and enriching environment that grows with them.
Wellington
Ngā Manu Nature Reserve in Waikanae has been involved with kiwi conservation and the National breeding programme since the 1980s. We have just completed a significant improvement to our Nocturnal House environment, which has made it more homely for our kiwi. We have installed an air conditioning unit so we can keep the temperature within the birds' preferred range. A cascade and stream were constructed which has added ambiance to the enclosure, as well as providing an opportunity for water-play, which kiwi are known to enjoy. We've also undertaken extensive landscaping of their environment. Sustaining the plant life in our Nocturnal House has been a constant challenge, so to we have completed our upgrade with the purchase of specialised LED Grow Lights and that's where we need your help.
The upgraded Nocturnal House will be home to our five-month-old kiwi Awhina (pictured here) and a soon-to-arrive young male kiwi. Donating to our campaign will enable us to support these young kiwi with a stimulating and enriching environment that grows with them.
The Ngā Manu Trust is a not-for-profit charity. Since 1974 we have been dedicated to the conservation & preservation of NZ's endangered species. Our Reserve contains a precious remnant forest where visitors can deepen their connection with nature.
This fundraising is to assist the purchase and installation costs of these new LED Grow Lights - 15 of which have been installed at a cost of $450 each. Any additional funds will go towards additional plants, food and ongoing kiwi care.
